XP SP2 cripples Windows Movie Maker!!!

P

PhiL M.

After updating to SP2, my WMM will not load. An error message that says
"Unspecified Error" pops up then disappears; that is what's left of my
WMM. The message does not present any option for more info.

I checked the version of the EXE file on the hard drive. It has been
upgraded to WMM2, whereas I was still using the original WMM bundled
with my Windows XP.

What is causing the error when loading WMM2? Is there a fix to this?

Is there a way to revert back to the original WMM without removing SP2?

Thanks!!

To relaod mm1 goto c:\windows\inf\moviemk (a 6mb setup info file) right
click then left click on instal in the menu list
you will need you win xp disc in a drive as install will look for file 386i
and then it reinstall mm1 to the original folder
hope this helps
good luck geo

Thanks for the suggestion, but this doesn't work at all.

Right click MOVIEMK.INF and click "Install" will result in Windows
asking for XP SP2 setup CD. I tried pointing it to my original XP CD,
but it was trying to reinstall WMM2 instead.

Still producing the "Unspecified Error" after reinstall. I just updated
another machine to SP2 and WMM2 is also giving the same error message.

Any other idea or a fix for this error?

Sorry, but pointing to the folder merely reinstalls WMM2, whereas I was
trying to restore to WMM1, which was working before SP2 replaced it with
WMM2, which doesn't work on both my computers.

I also tried replacing the MOVIEMK.INF with the original MOVIEMK.INF
from the XP setup CD, and tried to reinstall, but all I got was an
"Install Error" message.

Hi

If you need to use MM 1, you will have to uninstall SP2 and go back to using
SP1.

P

PhiL M.

Thanks. I was afraid of that.

Is there any way I can troubleshoot what is wrong with my WMM2? I have
2 computers and they both get the same "Unspecified Error" message after
installing SP2.

Thanks.

Not really. One can keep both WMM1 and WMM2 (or WMM2.1) running at the same
time. Just copy the moviemk.exe from the SP1 cd and place it "renamed" to
mm1.exe in the normal movie maker folder: C:\Program Files\Movie Maker.

Hi

The files that MM1 & MM2 need are different. Copying the MM1 file onto the
SP2 system will not work. MM - in which ever format needs to be properly
installed - including the Registry entries. Are you saying that copying MM1
onto a SP2 system is going to include all the necessary Registry entries????

Yes thats what I am saying.

For some reason the upgrade to MM2 does not remove required DLLs for MM1.
Actually these DLLs were special in the first place since these were
protected by WFP (Windows File Protection). Therefore it seems all DLLs and
relevant registry entries remain intact when upgrading to WMM2 via windows
update or otherwise; or upgrading to WMM2.1 by installing SP2. Only thing
that gets overwritten is moviemk.exe file, however many new DLLs are
installed.

Hence bringing "moviemk.exe" file from the original XP CD, or SP1 CD or
anywhere else works just fine. The trick is not to over write the WMM2
executable, so copy the file somewhere else first, rename it (to say
mm1.exe) and then copy the renamed file into "C:\Program Files\Movie Maker"
folder.

It is actually somewhat beneficial to have both versions since:

* MM1 provide 30 fps working environemnt (compared to MM2's 15fps)
* Saves in older DV AVI Type 2 (compared to MM2's Type 1).

This trick was discussed on www.papajohn.org website a while ago and more
info is present there.

OMG!!!!! This works!!!!! My WMM1 is back. I wonder why WMM2 wouldn't
load. Tried the checklist at PapaJohn's website but found nothing.
While my version 2 doesn't work, at least I now have my version 1 to
work with.

Thank you Rehan and everyone so much who lent a hand!!!!

i have this same problem. I thought i may have something to do with WMP10?
Anyway, it seems to import files fine if you havent opened WMP since you
logged on. Well for me anyway, i really hope this can be fixed properly
sometime.

I think ive found the answer. I deleted all my collections from Windows Movie
Maker 2 that i currently had. Now ive not had any more Unspecified Error
mesasges when importing.

Interesting. Unfortunately, this doesn't work for me - one of my
computers doesn't even have anything in the Collection.
