Windows Movie Maker does not start

G

Garatti

I have Windows XP SE and when I try to start Windows Movie Maker it freezes
before finishing starting. There's a prompt to report a problem what I have
been doing.

I tried to download the WMM from Microsoft's website but I can't get to it
or even to the Service Package 2 that contains the WMM. When I ask to se what
uodates are available for my computer the SP2 is not shown.

What can I do?

If you right click your My Computer icon and
choose...Properties / General tab...SP2 will
be listed under System if you have it installed.

Movie Maker 2.1 is installed as a component
of WinXP SP2. You can download SP2 from
the following site:

Download Windows XP SP2

Generally, users install from the net but this
site allows you to download the complete
file to your hard drive before installing.

It's good for a network administrator because
you can burn it on a CD and install it on as
many computers as you need to.

And it's good for a single machine because
if you ever need to install it again...you'll have
it available without waiting for a download.

Some users have reported problems
after installing IE7. If this applies to your
situation ...uninstalling IE7 may be worth
a try.

I've also seen a report that disabling the
ffdshow codec could be the fix. To accomplish
this...open Movie Maker and go to...Tools /
Options / Compatibility tab...Uncheck...
ffdshow / OK.

===
(You can disable ffdshow with this command:
regsvr32.exe /u "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax"
After running that command, the regular
DivX/XviD codecs will be used instead of ffdshow.
You can enable ffdshow again with this command:
regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax" )

John, I followed your instructions and I do have Service Pack 2 loaded for
Windows XP, but I do not have Movie Maker on my computer. As previous
posters have said, I can't download it from Microsoft's download site. They
only have MM for Vista available and updates for Movie Maker. How can I add
Movie Maker in whatever version to my computer? Thanks in advance!

If Movie Maker is on your system the
following steps should launch it.

Go to..Start / Run...

Type moviemk.exe

Press Enter

If Movie Maker does not launch...proceed

is not installed successfully?

If you still have no success...download and
reinstall WinXP SP2:

Thanks so much! Movie Maker was installed, but didn't show up in programs or
add/delete programs, or Explore, or wherever else I thought to look. It's
working like a charm too. Appreciate your help!
