XP SP2 - auto update seems hung

Since yesterday AM, the auto update icon has been on in
my XP Home taskbar. When I mouse over it, it
says "downloading updates: 0%". It has been 0% for more
than 24 hours.

I have another machine on my home network - my
daughter's. She got the same icon yesterday AM but the
SP2 update downloaded on her machine it I applied it with
no problems.

It seems hung. How to I fix this?

Could be something as simple as losing the connection to Microsoft's server.
Not your fault. In the first place, you can bet that Microsoft's servers are
mighty busy these days. And even if there wouldn't be a problem on the
Microsoft end, any server between Microsoft and your computer could have
dropped the ball.

Solution: Try again another time.

Better solution: Try again in September or even October. Let other people be
the guinea pigs. By the middle of October, whatever problems SP 2 causes
should be fixed. And with an upgrade as substantial as SP 2, you would
expect there to be some kinks. If you practice safe and sensible computing
you can afford to wait, along with the rest of the smart money.

But that's the problem - there isn't any way of "trying".

It appears that the problem is that you downloaded one
update onto a network of two computers and it only took on
one. That is not unusual. Disconnect your daughter's
computer from the network and start the download over on
your computer and see if that solves the problem. If not,
then invert the order of your computers at home (perhaps
your daughters computer is closer to the info source and
try that. '

Good Luck

"That is not unusual"?
What is your source?
That would actually be very unusual.

The fact the computer is on a network is not relevant.
Businesses with 5, 10 or even thousands of computers do not have
issues such as you describe.
