my xp has slowed from when first buying it I'm interested in turning off some "servieces" but I'm sure what some of them do. Can anyone help me?
Which ones can be turned off? Will the performance improve without it?

Thanks

Stuart, here are a couple of good guides on XP Services

Have you done a check for Malware. If not, you can use these sites

Of course it is, it is a part of the package that is mentioned on the
outside box. Cleanup is essential, running contig and sdelete, cleaning
your swap file, deleting temp directories
or
Try Linux.

http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/blkviper/servicecfg.htm is from
Black Viper's old site--is he still around?

Anywho, it's a great comprehensive page on what you can disable or set
to manual.

However, how old is your system? Do you run disk cleanup and defrag
every 3 months or so?

Like Rich said--have you checked for Malware--specifically ad-ware and
spyware? Do you run an updated anti-virus? Malware is notorious for
slowing your computer to a screeching halt.

Have you considered maybe backing everything up and just re-installing
XP. If you have the installation disks for all your software as well
as XP it might be easier just to start over versus trying to cleanup.

Speaking of cleaning up, have you tried ccleaner? It is a free
application that will allow you to clean up your hard drive. I can
often free up 3-5 gigs of space. It also has a registry cleaner--which
I don't recommend for beginners--but for advanced users it will remove
old and invalid registry entries which often will speed up at least
your boot time. Shameless to post this link I know but here are some
videos for beginners I did on ccleaner--check them out if you're
interested: http://discoverxp.com/ccleaner

I personally recommend backing up and just re-installing XP as 9 times
out of 10 it's easier then trying to coax windows to run faster
disabling services, cleaning the registry, and so on. All of those
services by the way are Windows XP services and not services an
application installed. Which means they were running when you first
had your PC so what makes you think disabling any will drastically
speed up your system?

Let us know how it goes. =)
