Hard Drive is making horrible noises, please help with Logging errors.

B

Bob Brown INC.

My Hard Drive is making some bad noises and I need to be able to
review or log the errors. I disabled a lot of services and I need to
know which services should be turned back on in order to Log/View the
Disk Errors.

I've already consulted with the Services Websites like eldergeek and
blackviper and cannot find an explanation as to which services must be
on in order to do this.

Give me a hint or perhaps a web site that I am not aware of, thank
you.

I realize it was dumb to disabled so many services But I normally
didn't need to know all of these since previous Hard drives were not
having the problems this one is having.

This is the list of services I have disabled currently on my computer.
It's a Win Xp Home Service Pack [2].

If the hard drive is make horrible noises, do not wait too long!! Get
a new hard drive FAST and move what you can over to the new drive.
The longer you wait, the more chances that the hard drive will "die"
and you will loose your files.

I seriously doubt that your having turned off services is the source of your
hard disk "noise", although you didn't bother to describe at all what it
sounds like.
If you're getting anything but normal sounds from your hard drive, there
really is no time for testing: You need to replace it sooner than later.
You are 99% likely to be hearing death rattles; it is never normal to have
anything but normal sounds from a disk drive.
You need to quickly get all your data off it and saved someplace safe
where it can be recovered. You shouldn't touch, move or otherwise mess with
the drive until you get your data off it; it's getting ready to die.
Once the data is off, then you need to have a replacement handy because
it could fail anytime between the time you sent your post and now, or next
week or next month; it's impossible to predict accuartely.

As for the services you've listed, some of them don't make sense but that's
not the issue. Only your own situation can determine which services you
need or don't need for sure. It's very, very unlikely they're responsible
for the hard drive noise as discussed already.
I doubt whether the services you turned off had any affect on anything,
actually, including boot times if that's why you did it. You should revisit
that situation and KNOW what you're turning off, why, and what things
depended on it. I'd recommend turning them all back on, honestly, and
leaving them alone or starting over and being a lot more choosey.
Definitely ignore them until you get the disk situation straightened out or
you're asking for disaster with your drive data.

Oh yeah, since you have the Event Log turned off, you're not likely to be
able to get any useful data from anything in your system anyway. It's the
main respository of system operations success/failure messages and one of
the first places I look for system problems. There will often be an error
there that indicates what might be wrong. Heck, you can't even do a System
Restore or copy any in-use files necessary for system backups. Etc..

Run the Windows checkdisc application to correct any errors in the disc.
http://www.updatexp.com/windows-xp-chkdsk.html
And enable the following services which are related to error and
notification reports but you should probably enable all those you disabled
since services usually depend on eachother.

The problem you're experiencing with the HD is an indication that it may be
close to failure. Install a system information application like EVEREST,
ASTRA32, PC Wizzard 2007, Fresh Diagnose.
EVEREST and ASTRA provide information on the harddrive condition
with a warning sign in:
EVEREST\Storage\Smart
ASTRA\Harddrives and Diagnostics

The following services should enable error and event reports:
System Event Notification Service (automatic)
Error Reporting service (automatic)
Event Log Service (automatic)
Alerter Service (manual)
Logical Disk Manager Service (automatic)
Logical Disk Manager Administrative Service (manual)
Performance Logs and Alerts Service (Manual)
COM+ Event System Service (manual)

I wouldn't bother with services; you are wasting what little time the drive
has left. Get another drive and replace this one that is about to fail,
before it finally goes and takes your data with it.

Don't send it back for warranty (if it is under warranty) untill your data
is OFF of it. The manufacturer will throw your data away.

Best bet is to shut the drive down and remove it. Attach it to another
system that has enough space to clone the drive, then use the Acronis True
Image trial version to make an image. This may seem overkill, but it will
take the smallest amount of time and get all of the data. You can clone to
a new drive, which should get you up and running very quickly.

No, I would not suggest doing that! First get the data off the disk, and
*then* you can run chkdsk.

If you run chkdsk before saving your data, you may lose all you data,
particularly if the drive is failing.

Cheers,

Cliff

Happens when idle or super busy.

So, turn on services default and see?

I'll go with maybe a problem with your connection or a temporary

I have a 6000kbps connection, I doubt it was me.
