Xp Security Center

Erick

Hello, I'have read about Windows security center and it seems that, when you
get an spyware virus it changes to "XP Security Center", is that true ? Also,
when I try to uninstall it disappears, but when I restart the Pc it comes
again, it keeps on sending me messagges about my computer infected, when you
follow their links,
it goes to www.xpsecuritycenter.com/buy. I tried to disable "the way that
alerts me" but it doesnt work, also I tried to look for "sevices" to disable
it too, and the
service doesnt exist. Can some one help me with this ??? Is there a way to
remove it ??

Thanks in advance.

Any update on this? I had this occur and thought my AV had quarantined it;
however, next attempt could not boot. Hard drive is now garbage, can't read
from or even format - coincidence?

If you boot from a CD or DVD and cannot format the drive, this sounds like a
hardware issue to me--so coincidence would be my thought.

Is the drive seen by the bios? Have you tried the drive manufacturers
diagnostics? Most drive makers will have a downloadable file which can
create a bootable medium and test a drive without using the OS of the
system. This is well worth using.

How old is the drive?

Yes, that was my thought also.
The system is close to 5 years old. Getting a new laptop wouldn't be so
bad, except for the photos that I haven't backed up on my hard drive .
I'll try your suggestions about the drive mfg.'s diagnostics. It can't read
my (AVG?) rescue disk.
Thanks

In general, changing a drive in a laptop is somewhat easier than changing
one in a desktop--so I wouldn't necessarily go for a new machine yet. If
the drive is truly dead, you do have a lot of work to do to reload stuff,
though, to say nothing of what you've lost.

There are a number of vendors of external cases to hold a laptop-sized drive
and connect to another system via USB, for example.

If you are able to recover stuff from the current drive, such an external
box can make it possible to get the backup onto a new drive without recourse
to a network, which is the easiest way to shift stuff around, if you have
other machines to connect to.

On the average Dell laptop--changing the drive involves one screw to remove
the drive from the system, and perhaps 4 more at most to remove the drive
from the carrier tray and replace another in that tray.

So--last things to think about: 1) Does the bios--hit f2 or del or whatever
at startup--recognize the drive as being there? If it is possible to boot
the system with the original OS CD, see if there is a Repair console choice.
This is a command prompt environment which is limited in scope in what it
can do--but you should be able to see whether you can do a Dir of C: and see
anything useful.

The help you'll need to get this going is beyond the scope of what we can
handle well here, I'm afraid, but lets see how those tests go, and maybe I
can come up with another group that can handle the rest of the work with you
if you need help.

Good old Windows 98 - lost my first reply to blue screen.
Was set to get new machine and not too concerned about reloading. It is a
pain but have had to reload XP (thanks Gateway). Tried all below - drive is
truly dead. Now I found out my backup software is not supported on Vista,
nor is VPN. Guess I will be looking into new drive short term. And maybe a
shiny new laptop soon after!

I'm surprised about the VPN--dunno about the backup software. I would guess
that maybe the ultimate VPN vendor does support vista, but that perhaps the
enterprise you need to connect to hasn't licensed the newer stuff yet?
