XP rejects Office 97

Just purchased a new desktop with Windows XP home edition pre-loaded. All attempts to install Office 97 - Pro produce the following error message: \setup.exe in not a valid Win 32 application. As Office 97 meets my needs I am reluctant to fork over the $300. for the XP version of office. Am I stuck or is there some way to get past this error message and load Office 97

Thanks.

Rob;
Office 97 works with Windows XP.
That error is usually associated with installing a 64 bit application
on a 32 bit computer...not likely in this case.
Bad download...Are you using an original CD?
Have you cleaned the CD?
Have you cleaned the drive?

Otherwise take this to an Office newsgroup as this newsgroup is
primarily for the Help and Support function of Windows XP.

Try disabling your antivirus software before attempting to install Office.

New computer is using AMD Athlon 64 processor but assume this should be no problem. Yes, am using the original CD and have tried cleaning it but continue to get same error message. Also, I have original CD for Office Standard 2000 but this won't install either (same message). The drive is new so cleaning that seems an unlikely fix. So far, I've not been able to install any software through the D cd r/w drive, including a photo editor program (Picasa) that claims to be XP compatible. Also, there is no anti-virus installed to disable so no dice there. Very frustrating!

Thanks for your response. I'll try the Office newsgroup

I've checked programs and there is no antivirus software installed. I guess that's a different problem.

Thanks for your response.

Hey Rob,

One trick I tried was setting the properties of the setup.exe to become Windows
98/95 Compatible, then try launching it.

Office setup programs (and one other) are the only 16 bit programs that will run on XP 64 bit.

Try copying the files to hard disk and install from there. Try renaming setup.exe to something else.
