Office 97 Load

I installed a new hard drive on my Compaq system. Installed Windows XP Home
OS. I'm now trying to load my Office 97 Professional and I get a "Cannot find
SHELL.DLL" error. Also get a "cannot run 16 bit windows program " error,
along with "cannot find file D:\Setup.exe" check to ensure the path and
filename are correct.

The Office 97 does say for "windows nt and windows 95" , but I can't imagine
I would not be able to load on XP ? Also, I loaded the Office 97 on another
Dell system at home with XP and it loaded fine.

Any help would be appreciated....

I have had some problems loading some older software from CD into my XP
computer. The solution has often been to copy the whole CD to a temporary
directory on the disk (but not C:\TEMP or C:\Windows\TEMP), then run the
installation from there by double-clicking on an obvious file like
"SETUP.EXE" or similar.

As always, be sure that all other user programs are closed, and the virus
scanner is turned off, before attempting the installation. Also, unplug all
peripherals, except the monitor, keyboard, mouse. (Parallel port printers
are usually OK to leave connected.)
