Make sure that the laptop logon account/password is also
defined on the desktop and that this account has appropriate
access permissions to the folder(s) you wish to access.

That should not be necessary, remote users authenticate as guest. This *was*
the case with Win2K and earlier versions, but not in XP.

Here we need more information. Are folders properly shared on the XP Pro
machine? Can it be seen in the network neighborhood? Is there an error
message? Are the two machines using the same workgroup name? Has simple file
sharing been disabled on the Pro machine (this later one, if disabled, can
cause the user to need to adjust local security settings)?

Hi, thanks for your prompt replies, sorry i should have explained abit more.
I have enabled sfs however, i cannot see the pro machine from the home
machine, the error i get says the pc is not accessible. you might not have
permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of this
server to find out if you have access permissions. access is denied.
I have enable the guest account on both maqhines with no password assigned
and i have disable the icf. Both machines have the same workgroup name.
thanks for your help in advance.

Hi,

You shouldn't have to enable the guest account for it to work. Start by
rechecking your share settings on the XP Pro machine, the files cannot just
be set for everyone to read, but rather the folder must be a web share.
Sometimes it's as simple as rebooting to enforce the configuration changes.

Also, start/run secpol.msc and check that Net work access for anonymous
users is enabled for everyone under Local Policies\Security Options.

Hi,

Is this your machine or one used by you and owned by your employer?

Hi Andy,

Just noticed in your original post that the Pro system has only SP1
installed. For shared folders to work properly with the Windows Firewall
running, SP2 must be installed. The workaround in SP1 is to disable the
firewall - not something you should do unless the system is protected by
another layer of protection.
