XP Pro, IE7, & HP

Ooh my head hurts!

I upgraded to IE 7 Beta, am running XP Pro SP 2, and am trying to scan audit
documents on HP PSC 2110 using HP Director.

HP Dir will not open --- "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime
Error! Application has required runtime to terminate in an unusual way."

On line chat w/ HP --- said to uninstall IE 7. Uninstalled IE 7 through
control panel & lost ability to open anything!

Accessed Microsoft help thru Mozilla --- said to reinstall SP2.

Reinstalled SP2 ---- PC went into a boot loop! Finally pulled out old hard
drive to get reconnected long enough to get to here and try to fix the newer
hard drive.

Well, I can download programs but cannot install them --- MsiInstaller Error
code 1603.

Cannot use system restore ----"The COM+ Event System detected a bad return
code during its internal processing. HRESULT w3as C0000005 from line 44 of
d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\event s\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp. Please contact MS
Prod Supp Svcs to report the error.

Cannot access e-mail without re-installing IE 7 to get the documents I need
to scan which means I lose HP Director again. Grrrr!

Is there something I can do to:

1) fix the runtime error for HP Director?
2) get back the ability to install downloads from Windows &/ Microsoft Update?
3) uninstall IE 7 / revert back to IE 6 without losing everything again?

Please, what's the attraction in trying to run beta software? I honestly
can't understand anyone wanting to become an unpaid guinea pig.

My only thought is quite a few of these people don't realize what "beta"
means. That said, there are people out there who do know what they are
accepting and who are able to sort problems out.

My own feeling is that there are enough troubles with production software.
I certainly don't want to be an unpaid debugger.

John ---- I AM paid by my company to test beta software and provide feedback
to my employer whether I think it's worthwhile to stay with the product we
have, consider the newer version, or choose a totally different alternative.

That being said --- I was asking for help, not your opinion. I'm not sure
this is the forum for you to gain a better understanding anyone's attraction
to running "beta" software.

Jim ---
Perhaps you & Mr. Nice could take some interpersonal relationship courses.
As I stated before, I was asking for help, not a condescending commentary on
whether "these people" understand what "beta" means.

I've had the same problem with HP Director since installing IE7. Your
'solution' works on my machine so I can at least work now, thanks.

But it's a ridiculous rigmarole to have to go through! How does one report
things like this to Microsoft, and what are they going to do to fix it
properly? I might add that I only loaded IE7 because it seemed - according to
the MS ad I was on Yahoo - to have come out of beta and be the real thing!

One unhapppy IE7 user, grrrrrrr!

Sorry Ricky but you're wrong. Director was working fine with everything just
as promised until I put IE7 on the machine, and now it won't run at all, so
it's definitely Microsoft's problem. If I was HP I'd sue. Meanwhile I think
I'll just uninstall IE7, and warn as many people as I can to steer well clear
of it.......
