XP, NT and 98

This is getting really annoying so any help would be appreciated. My boss's
laptop had to go in for service and when we got it back it the hard drive
had been unnecessarily wiped so we have to re-configure everything from
scratch. Our environment is mostly Windows 98 on the desktop and our domain
server is Windows NT 4.0 SP6. We also have an old Netware 3.12 server that
holds some old legacy softare. The laptop is XP with SP2. Whether the domain
is logged onto he can see the server without any problem. But the problem is
seeing other client machines on the network. At first he couldn't see any of
them. Then when the Windows Netware client had been loaded he could see the
Netware server and 4 of the other computers. Nothing seems to be able to
restore the ability to browse to the other Win 98 machines, though. Any
ideas?

Check the network name, 98 used workgroup, XP if I remember uses something
different

Actually the terms for both 98 and XP are domain and workgroup. What's
different is where you set them. Those settings are correct on the laptop.

Sorry I could not help, it is just that I remember having problems in the
office with a mixture of XP & 98. For once I have a XP Pro system in the
office and that also defaults to workgroup, maybe it is XP Home that uses, I
think, mshome.

What happens if you browse the 'entire network'?

If only TCP/IP is installed there isn't anything but the server. If I add
the IPX protocol it will see a few machines because we still have IPX
running because of a legacy Netware server that the boss doesn't want to
switch to IP.
