In our classroom I attempted to set up a network printer using a D-Link print
server which never happened but is no longer my most urgent problem. But now
on the computer I used to access the print server configuration, I somehow
have the classic logon prompt when I boot up but I want the Welcome Screen
like I had before. If I go into Control Panel>User Accounts>Change the way
users log on or off, I get the message:
"Client Services for NetWare has disabled the Welcome screen and Fast user
switching. To restore these features, you must uninstall Client Services for
NetWare."
Well, you can probably guess what's coming at this point: Client Services
for NetWare is not installed in the first place.
I already read KB article 315347 with instructions on how to go into Network
Connections>Properties>General Tab, highlight Client Service for Netware, and
then click Uninstall. There's no Client Services for NetWare to install!
Nevertheless I get that message when I try to change to the Welcome Screen
and Fast User Switching. The Select Logon and Logoff Options text is greyed
out.
I thought I would go ahead and add Client Services for NetWare and then
uninstall it, but when I do that I get the message, "Could not add the
requested component. The error is: The remote procedure call failed."
This only occurs on the machine that I used to access the print server
configuration which involved temporarily giving it a fixed IP address,
creating a port, installing drivers, etc. I have no printers now and an error
message when I try to add one, "Operation could not be completed. The print
spooler service is not running." (Print spooler set to automatic, so yes,
it's running.) But the print server problem is the least of my worries. The
students in the classroom are accustomed to the Welcome screen and will get
confused with the logon prompt. How do I get back to the Welcome screen
without reinstalling Windows? (Which may be my only option at this point.)
All other machines on the network still have the Welcome screen. Any help
would be appreciated.
