XP not hibernating?

Hi All,
I know it's an age old problem, which has just started on my own vista
laptop.
I have one user who wishes to use the hibernate function on his laptop, but
each time he selects hibernate as the shutdown type, the laptop just hangs
on the windows desktop, with "preparing to hibenate" displayed. So far it
has sat like this overnight, so it's one hell of a preparation required!!

I have deselected the hibernate option, rebooted and the reselected it, but
still it happens?

Any ideas??

Thanks

If its an older laptop with a small hard drive
how much free space is remaining of the drive?

Also how much memory does the laptop have?

Hi JS,

it's running of 2Gb of ram, and has a 160Gb HDD, with only 60Gb used.
I was thinking along your train of thought when I was shown the laptop.
The laptop itself is only about 12 months old, so quite recent and up to
date.

Cheers

Check of updated and revised drivers. Some hardware have been known
to prevent hibernation, especially several wireless keyboards / mice.

Try this one-line command or put it in a batch file:

%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll SetSuspendState S4

If this doesn't work, perhaps the laptop doesn't have the hardware
capability to hibernate.
