Random System Shutdown

In certain programs (e.g. MSWord, MS Hoyle Card Games) my Toshiba Pentium III laptop simply shuts down - for no apparent reason. On a subsequent manual start, there is no indication of the abnormal shutdown. Just a normal startup process. Any file that was being worked prior to shutdown is lost, i.e. not recovered. Cannot seem to correlate the problem to any specific action

Also, another apparently uncorrelated problem: When I close the display, the system enters the "Preparing to HIbernate" mode and hangs up. that is, it never hibernates

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Hi

Is there any entry in Event Viewer that may point to the problem?
