System Shutdown/Re-start (Random)

Hi, I could do with some help advice on a persistent yet random problem:

Background:
AMD Athlon K7 chip/motherboard running WindowsXP PRO with three quarters of
a gig of RAM. Fitted, 2 HDDs and 2 CD drives. Running 24/7 and is the hub of
a small network. i.e. My kids have a PC which is connected to the internet
through mine, via cross over cat 5 cable and internal broadband modem.
Also running Zone Alarm Pro and Norton Anti Virus (have been for over 12
Months so don't suspect these).
All fine until recently, but my machine has started to just shutdown and
re-start.
Re-boots into the disc consistency checking screen and insists on checking
the C:\ drive (i.e. boot and applications disc) and this can take some time.
Once re-booted, the machine will run for several hours before crashing again.
Have performed a complete system virus scan against NAV with upto date virus
definitions and nothing found.

One other strange occurence noted is that when on-line accessing fields can
take several key presses before the character is entered/recognised.

My thoughts are that the problem could lie in a number of areas, although
the only one that is subject to any degree of change due to wear and tear is
the C:\ drive ?

I'd welcome any 2nd or 3rd or 4th opinions before taking any positive action
based on the amount of time this usually entails.

Many thanks in advance,

Hi

If you don't see any error messages, right click on My Computer, select
Properties and then the Advanced tab. Click on Settings under Startup and
Recovery and disable 'Automatically restart'. Next time your PC reboots,
you should see a Blue Screen. Could you please post the Stop Code from the
BSOD?

Also, please have a look in the Event Viewer to see if any entries there may
refer to the problem.

OK, done the first part - have to wait until the next crash now.

Not familiar with the 'event viewer' could you point me the right direction.

Many thanks,
