xp system hangs on shutdown

Somewhere along the line something got messed up in the shutdown routine and
it hangs when the "windows is shutting down" box appears. It goes through
the first two; "Logging off," and "Saving your settings" ok. It shutdown
normally before this started happening.

If I shut down without running a lot of aps it runs shuts down properly. If
I use it on the net for a while, run excell., do email via Outlook xp, and
then shut down, it hangs.

So far, to fix this, I have done the following:

Insured there is no virus in the system.
Installed all the xp sp1 critical patches.
Closed all programs running in the background prior to shut down.
Got new drivers for the nvidia card and installed them.
Got a clean bill of health from AdAware and Spybot
Read a lot of stuff from a google search, but nothing there fixed it.

system: XP pro SP1, 512M PC 3200 DDR, nvidia Gforce 400 MX 64 Megs, WD 120G
, Plextor 12X burner, comcast cable internet, integrated sound, kb, optical
mouse, dell monitor, altec lansing spkers, AMD XP 2.6 G CPU, Asus A7VAX-X
mobo. This is a homebuilt system.

Any ideas much appreciated,

If you are running XP, try using System Restore to go back to before it
started happening. If you find a restore point where the problem is gone,
try to figure out what you did AFTER that particular Day/time to make it
stop shutting down properly. -Dave

Yep it's waiting for something to shut down.
On mine I find if I shut down the "Incd" program that comes with Nero, as
well as another running process connected to my internal Zip100 drive, it
closes straight away. (imgicon.exe ?)
It is just a matter of finding which one is refusing to close on your setup.
Hit "ctrl/alt/del" & it will be one of those under "processes".

Its something to do with unloading User Profiles.

In the Event Viewer, Application log:

Windows XP and 2003:

You will see of the following error events in the application log:

Userenv/1517:

Windows saved user X registry while an application or service was still
using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's
registry
has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer
in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try
configuring the
services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

Userenv/1524:

Windows cannot unload your classes registry file - it is still in use
by other
applications or services. The file will be unloaded when it is no
longer in use.

Userenv/1500:

Windows cannot log you on because your profile cannot be loaded. Check
that you
are connected to the network, or that your network is functioning
correctly. If
this problem persists, contact your network administrator.

This last error (1500) is relevant if you find one of the other ones
earlier in
the application log.

If you haven't defraged your hard drive in a long time, get rid of some
junk on your hard drive then defrag. It might help. I noticed my shutdown
problems disappeared after this.

We have same problem after"WAREZ" was installed. We kill it in the
task bar before shutting down.

First get rid of all the junk on your hard drive, and empty the recycle bin.
Next reboot your system in safe mode. You should be able to succesfully
defrag the hard drive in safe mode. One that is done, you can reboot
Windows normally. I suggest that you then perform another defrag, as
it seems like your hard drive is really mucked up. In the future, you should
plan to defrag your hard drive at least once a month. Some people
suggest that defraging be done weekly, but I think that is overkill.

I tried use defraged but, it's only reaches 10% everytime use it. Why?
Thanks.
Hi, sluggo. If you empty your temporary internet files and clear out
History (under Tools>Internet Options on the browser task bar; then, using
"con-Alt-Delete", shut down all the programs/ap'ns that are running
unnecessarily; then, defrag should zoom on past the 10 % to completion.
Also, as another poster said(IIIRC), tap on F8 during bootup and choose
"Safe Mode" to boot into; it can then be defragged pretty much regardless of
what's running as indicated when you hit Con-Alt-Del.
HTH & good luck, s
