XP key extractors

There are quite a few key extractors for windows XP i have a few computers
and was attempting to match my keys to the computers they belong to. As we
change cases frequently having the key stuck to the case/chasis really
doesn't help. I downloaded about 5 none of them worked. What worries me is
that some of them are charging people for these extractors which don't work
surely microsoft can release a key extractor to system builders so that they
at least can reload computers if need be. Instead of having fly by night
products which cheat people out of their hard earned cash.

What exactly is a "Key extractor"?

A windows product key extractor i.e. the number you type in when you load
your copy of windows 95/98/me/2000/xp/vista/2003/xp64/2003x64 office
2000/xp/98/2003 etc. normally found on you coa(certificate of authenticity)
this number is stored albeit encrypted on your computers hard drive, and
people write software/extractors which decrypts this information to give you
hopefully your original key. cool?

That, I find very, very difficult to believe (changing cases often). Even
if true, its not that difficult to transfer the key manually in form of your
own sticker or an indelible marker/laundry pen directly to the new PC
enclosure/case.

Yes, and there's some evidence that some of these key interrogators are
sending info home. Its also common knowledge that some older versions won't
work with XP, some won't work with SP2 and higher either.

Doubt if a genuine system builder would need that.

Instead of having fly by night
products which cheat people out of their hard earned cash.

Last I looked, the commonly used key interrogators are free. Sounds like
you're an alleged victim of your own cloak and dagger veiled as ignorance.
The only victim would be the reader who fell for the victimization theme of
your post.

I see. I could not see the word "product" in your first post and thought you
were talking about keyboards. Have a look here:

Download the SIW Standalone(English only)
Click on "Licences" in the left-hand column.
Windows, Office, etc Product Keys show up in right pane.

You can install and run it from a Flash Drive/ memory Stick.

Thanks this does actually work further I tried a few of the others on
diferent computers and found the reason why I was saying they don't work. I
have a toshiba laptop with a recovery cd which obviously has a different key
to the one stuck on the bottom of the laptop.

Interesting now I know too.

Thanks again

I'm always glad when someone tells me what I'm thinking, even if comes from
someone with "Mad" as a prefix to his name. I like honest people.

Write the key on the motherboard before you change the case.

You've been given several good suggestions on key extractors.

The primary reason for wanting the key is to reinstall the OS.
Here's my experience with older DELL, Gateway and Compaq computers.

The key extracted is different from the one on the case sticker.

If you have the "proper" install CD, you don't need the key at all;
it's automatically inserted.

If you don't have the "proper" install CD, neither of the keys will
work with ANY CD you have on hand.

So, where do you get the "proper" install CD? In most cases, you
can't...legally...
at least not at a price significantly less than just buying a new OS.

I'd be pleased to be proved wrong...with procedure to make it work.
