XP Keeps Changing My System Tray Customizations

Hi.

This issue concerns a laptop with Windows XP SP2 Home Edition. The
system is up-to-date with all critical updates from the Microsoft
Update web site.

I use the 'Hide inactive icons' feature to only display system tray
icons that I need to see; otherwise, there are way too many unneeded
icons in the system tray.

For the most part, this feature works as I expect. The issue is
that each time I reboot the system, XP changes the setting for at
least one of the icons (i.e., an icon previously set to 'Always
hide' changes to 'Hide when inactive' or some icons previously set
to 'Always show' change to 'Always hide', et cetera). This issue
necessitates a trip to the customizations dialog box to reverse the
change(s) after each reboot.

I cannot recognize any particular pattern or consistency to these
changes (aside from the fact that at least one icon is affected
after each reboot.) In other words, sometimes a particular icon's
setting changes upon reboot, and other times it does not. Sometimes
an icon's setting changes from 'Always show' to 'Always hide', and
other times it changes from 'Always show' to 'Hide when inactive'.
Sometimes icons in the 'Past Items' list change, but this issue
mostly affects the 'Current Items'.

I'm stuck. Does anybody have knowledge about this issue? I would
sure like to resolve it because resetting these customizations after
each reboot is starting to get on my nerves.

Thanks for any time you spend considering this issue.

PS: For those who would like to know, these settings appear on the
'Customize Notifications' dialog box. To get there, right-click the
taskbar and select 'Properties'. This opens the 'Taskbar and Start
Menu Properties' dialog box. On the 'Taskbar' tab, click the
[Customize.] button. This opens the 'Customize Notifications'
dialog box.

I went through all this and I think it is an MS bug they never got round
to fixing. I now use PS Tray Factory which keeps all my icons how I left
them!
