Is There A Way To Retain Unused-Icon Customizations?

Hi:

Windows XP SP2 ACU randomly alters my system-tray icon
customizations after nearly every Windows session.

This issue necessitates returning to the Customize Notifications
dialog box frequently after reboots to restore "Always show" and
"Always hide" settings.

Can anybody explain to me how to make these settings permanent?

Cheers,

Have you tried?
Right Click on Taskbar. Select Properties. First tab "Taskbar" at the
bottom, uncheck "Hide Inactive icons" then "Apply".

Hello poatt:

Thank you for responding.

If I uncheck the Hide Inactive Icons check-box, then inactive icons
in the system tray are not hidden. Are you trying to tell me that
Windows XP will not allow me to hide inactive icons and use
customized settings simultaneously?

Hello Wes:

Thanks for your response.

Unfortunately for me, Windows XP's behavior is not consistent with
some of the pertinent information contained on the web page to which
you directed me. For example, that page states, "By default,
Windows XP hides any inactive icons [in the Notification Area]."

This is not the case on my system; so, I want to set some inactive
icons to Always Hide.

Additionally, that page lists a few workarounds for icons that
disappear. I'm not sure whether or not the author is describing my
situation (i.e., an icon set to Always Show changes to Always Hide
after rebooting). Regardless, the workarounds do not work for me.
Logging off and on does nothing, and my account is already password
protected.

Finally, the registry offerings are too vague for me to understand.
These are listed:

Hide or show inactive icons
Hide inactive icons and more
Restore empty/full icons
Hide or show notification area icons

I do not understand the icon attributes "empty" and "full". I do
not understand the intent of the phrase, "and more". It seems to me
that some of these are duplicates.

The issue remains.

PS: No version of Windows XP comes with an air-conditioning unit
(heh, heh). ACU stands for All Critical Updates.
