XP home to XP professional

If I currently have XP Home on my computer (Dell), will
installing XP Professional completely wipe out everything
else, including pictures, and settings either on my
desktop or in my browser?

From the Desktop insert the Windows XP Pro CD (upgrade or full will
work)
Follow the prompts for upgrading.
Data and settings should be safe, back-up important data just in case.
