XP Home Screen Saver never starts

Sometime after installing XP home, I realized the
screensaver never starts. I've been unable to find a
solution - have tried all the usual settings in display
properties.

When I click preview, the selected screensaver starts,
and terminates as it should. But, the thing never
engages when the time setting expires.

Have searched MS site and other web sources for an
answer, have never found this topic.

Any ideas?
