XP Home and SATA & IDE drives

A

Annie

System is ASUS ASN-SLI Deluxe
ATHLON64
2 SATA drives on C+D

I am _trying_ to retrieve information from a WD 313600. It is
connected to the IDE slot on the board and Windows recognizes it as a
PNP and it shows in Device Manager, says it is working properly and
also says that the driver is the latest. Here's the BUT

It doesn't show in Explorer or My Computer, so I can't copy the files
to the SATA drives and be rid of IDE. I have moved the jumpers around
in a vain.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

TIA
Annie

Have you partitioned the drive and formatted the new partition(s)?
Before that it cannot be used by the system...

If its NTFS formatted, you can get that effect, with the OS refusing to mount it.

How does it show in Disk Management ?

If it shows as unformatted or RAW there, you can often see it fine
when you boot a knoppix CD and can copy the files off it that way.
BUT knoppix cant write to NTFS formatted drives, so if the other
drives are NTFS formatted, that can be a problem.

Uuuuh, I would loose the information on the drive if I formatted it.

Since the WD drive was originally in a Win98SE, it would still be
FAT32.
Disk Management shows it as Disk 0/Basic/12.73GB Capacity and 12.73
Unallocated/Online/IDE/MBR.

Are you saying I can use Knoppix for Linux in the WinXP CD drive and
retrieve the files and write them to another CD?
Thnx

OK, that's important. You can see XP turn up its nose at NTFS formatted
drives when other systems like knoppix are happy to read them fine.

That doesnt happen with FAT32 drives.
Disk Management shows it as Disk 0/Basic/12.73GB Capacity
and 12.73 Unallocated/Online/IDE/MBR.

Then something must have stomped on the partition table etc.

You need to use some recovery software to see the files again.

I like Easy Recovery Pro, but its not cheap if you need to pay for it.

No, not now that you have said that its FAT32 formatted,
you need to use a recovery program instead.

Thanks, I have Stompsoft's Recover Lost Data. It is real good also.
I'll be back to let you know the progress. Thnx again.

Oh, I noticed that my two SATA drives showed up in Disk Management as
IDE...go figure... one thing at a time. <g>

Rod, I am so grateful to you for pointing me in the right direction.
My "Recover Lost Data restored the drive and I chose all the files I
wanted to save from that drive to my SATA drive and everything went
well. I am so relieved and send a {{{{{Rod}}}} Thanks again.

Ah, so the problem is with the old disk. Sorry, I was reading too
fast.

And how did you put that data on it in the first place, if the
drive is not visible? If you don't tell us what you canged,
we cannot give advice.

The drive was in the old K5/200 I built many years ago on a Win98SE
system with a Fat32 format. Apparently, the partition was corrupted
somehow.

I was able to restore it last night, finally, with Stompsoft's
"Recover Lost Data

Thanks for being here to help.

No problem, thats what these technical newsgroups are for.

More below.

That's normal, some bios allow you to setup the SATA drives like that, basically
makes it easier for the OS which doesnt need to know that they are SATA.

No! Really?

Sure it does.
Particularly when the partition bootrecord backup sector is missing.

Nope, not necessarily.

Thanks for confirming what he said, Roddles, that it happens to FAT32
drives too.

Well, that is untrue. Of course there are failures where Linux
and XP cannot read the partition. But Linux (and by extension
Knoppix) is far more tolerant to inconsistencies and errors.
It is allways worth a try and the risk is small, since Knoppix
mounts all drives reliably read-only by default.

What is babblebot?
You're so spaced out that you don't even know what the topic is.
Of course there are failures where Linux and XP cannot read the partition.

XP won't if the backup bootsector of FAT32 is missing. It's a fact.
Roddles said it only has problems with NTFS, but not FAT32.
He is wrong -even said so in his own words- but as usual he won't
own up to it.
But Linux (and by extension Knoppix) is far more tolerant to
inconsistencies and errors.

The topic was XP, not zealux.
