Hello,
this is XP home edition, SP2.
I have no idea what happened. But 2-3 ago, when I wanted to shut down my
computer, it asked me that there are updates to install. OK, so it started
to install them. Then the installer crashed.

When I now boot my PC, eveytime I get this error:

"Generic Host process for Win32 services has encountered a problem and needs
to close"

My computer now is VERY slow, things do not work right, have a power off to
even shut it down.

Errr detailes
szAppName : svchost.exe szAppVer : 5.1.2600.2180 szModName : msi.dll
szModVer : 3.1.4000.2435 offset : 00012780

On the screen I get another windows says svchost.exe application error,
instruction at "0x745f2780" references memory at "0x00000000". Memory could
not be read.

When I send the error report, I get screen saying to install some patch.

I did. Had to go to safe mode to be able to install it.

But the problem still exist.

run NOrtan antivirus, and it is all CLEAN.

any ideas what to do now?

thanks,
Nasser

Problem Fixed.
After doing much search on the net, this is how the fix is:

using regedit, go to
HKey_local_machine\system\currentControlSet\Services\mrtRate
and changed Start=2 to Start=4

For some reason, something changed Start to 2. I think Windows automatic
update, becuase this problem started right after that, but I can not be
sure.

my PC is OK now :)

Congratulations! You had to only waste an hour to fix a problem that should
never have arose in the first place. Isn't the Windoze eXPerience so much
fun? Good thing you found the "fix" or else you'd still be rebooting that
box of yours.
