XP embedded CD writing doesn't see CD disk

The XP embedded CD writing software has stopped working.
An alternative writing program does work. Device Manager
indicates nothing wrong with my CD drive. Can anyone tell
me how to get the embedded XP CD writing software to work
again. The first time this happened I did a system
restore and got it back. This time no restore point
brings back this capability.

I tried the suggestion of going to properties of the
drive and checked that the box enabling recording was
checked.

Any body have more ideas?

Perhaps a system file relating to XP's cd burning was overwritten. Put
your XP cd in the drive and go to Start>Run and type "sfc /scannow"
without the quotes. Note that there is a space between "sfc" and "
scannow". This should replace any altered files.

I cannot use sfc/scannow because I only have a restore
disk for my original system. I don't have the full up XP
disk.

Ah, the joys of having those proprietary "restore disk/image" systems.
Well, then you could try borrowing a friend's copy of XP to run sfc,
although I don't know if that would work. Why do you want to use the
built-in recording anyway? Nero or Easy CD Creator are far more
richer-featured. Otherwise, I don't know what else you can do except a
repair install if your Restore system provides that.
