XP Crash

XP won't load. Screen says windows\system32\config system file is corrupted.
Then goes to a screen that says to press 'r' to repair. That trys restart and
then back to the same screen. How can I get beyond that or reinstall windows
from my XP disk? I have the disk in, but won't start.

To boot from the XP CD you must go into the BIOS and change the boot order
so that the CD is the first device then opt to do a repair install.

First thing to do is hit F8 while booting

then opt for: last good configuration

I did that. I went into the bios and put the cd first, but when it rebooted
it still did the network first an then the cd. The CMOS is also off and I
have changed the time and date several times, then save and exit, but it
keeps going back to 1999.

The date being reset to 1999 is indicative of a dead cmos battery

Thanks philo. I will check that. How do you get a dos prompt. I had a crash a
long time ago and was able to get a dos prompt and fix it from there. I can't
seem to figure out how I did that.

I changed the battery and now the cmos is holding the correct date. I still
need to figure out how to get a dos prompt or how to reinstall windows. I
can't get the cd XP disk to load even though I changed the order to local,
then network.
