XP CD Question

Matthew

Oh Learned Ones:

I have a registry problem (see Knowledge Base Article
307545) that calls for the "XP start-up disk". Windows
was installed on my machine by the manufacturer, and as
such all I have are the recovery Cds, no plain windows
cds. Any idea how I can get the recovery console without
having to buy another copy of windows?

Cheers,
Matthew

Hi David-
Thanks for your reply. In my case I do not have a floppy
drive on the machine in question. I tried downloading the
files from your link, and burning them to CD, but this
didn't work. It still wants "the original Setup CD-ROM".
Any ideas?

You will need to either purchase a copy of Windows XP or get a floppy drive.
The later is cheaper.

Hi Harry-
Is there a way to use my USB floppy? How do I get my PC
to boot off of a USB drive?
Cheers,
Matthew

It will be in the computer manual if you can. Or look around the BIOS (see computer manual).

It's possible the "CD" info you need is on your hard drive.
If you can figure out where it's at, you can just use the
Browse button on the message window to tell it where the
data ins.
Check with the place you bought the CD. Somewhere, in
your paperwork, there should be something to lead you to a
way to do what you need, but it's not oftenm obvious to the
lesser experienced.
Just my thoughts.

Matthew,
ARE YOU SURE that the CD you have does not have the Recovery Console
contained therein which you can extract if you need it? On XP Home it is not
normally installed by default if I am correct; to shorten a long story: 1. I
have a Dell Dimension 8200 on which XP Home came pre-installed. 2. The
furnished CD contains the said Recovery Console which at one time I
extracted and installed. Due to a later crash, I completely re-installed XP
and am without the Recovery Console except for the CD. If someone here can
give you the File Name/Number, I believe [at least hope] you will find it on
your CD also. If what you are trying to fix calls for an "XP Start-Up Disk",
stick what you have in the CD-ROM Drive. I think that it will do the trick
{worth a try at least}.
