XP Cds

Matthew

Oh Learned Ones:

I have a registry problem (see Knowledge Base Article
307545) that calls for the "XP start-up disk". Windows
was installed on my machine by the manufacturer, and as
such all I have are the recovery Cds, no plain windows
cds. Any idea how I can get the recovery console without
having to buy another copy of windows?

Cheers,
Matthew

Mathew, what happens if you go to Start/Run, type in CMD, OK, then type in
sfc /scannow and enter?

Sorry Mathew, you are going to need some of the smart people in this group,
I just thought I may be able to assist you with something simple.

Is it possible to boot into safe mode and use system restore to go back to a
time prior to your problem?

And that is about the limit of my meagre knowledge.

Hi

You can access the Recovery Console with a set of floppy disks:

"Windows XP Home Edition Utility: Setup Disks for Floppy Boot Install"

"Windows XP Professional Utility: Setup Disks for Floppy Boot Install

You don't. Right from the article:
Warning Do not use the procedure that is described in this article if your
computer has an OEM-installed operating system. The system hive on OEM
installations creates passwords and user accounts that did not exist
previously. If you use the procedure that is described in this article, you
may not be able to log back into the recovery console to restore the
original registry hives.

Since you have an oem computer and only a restore disk, that's your only
option. It will format the drive, you'll lose everything, and it will bring
your computer back to day one. You could try calling the oem first to see if
they can help, but most likely they'll have you load the restore cd.
This is just one of the many reasons not to buy an oem, cookie cutter
computer. Now you've learned a valuable lesson.

That is one of the problems with the CDs that OEM makers all too often
supply. Best bet is to borrow a retail CD from someone that has one; as
long as it is Home or Pro as appropriate it will serve for this purpose
