Just read TriplexDreads thread in Crunchers Corner about stopping Microsoft spying on you by turning off through admin tools/services: background intelligent transfer service, remote registry & messenger.

Does doing this harm your pc in anyway or does it just stop MS spying on you?

MS does not "spy" on you ...

The Messenger Service never did "phone home" but was exploited as a feed for pop-ups by some nasties writers.

Lets not get confused with the Messenger Service and MSN Messenger ... The Messenger Service is automatically turned off with the install of XPs SP2

Yeah thanks for mentioning that about the Messenger thing Mucks I forgot
Same as the Remote registry. That was full of exploits aswell.

You see the reason I disable stuff like that is purely a compatability problem.
Whenever I did auto updates from MS my system continuelly came to a halt. Slowed right down it was pitifull!

So now if I do a update I only allow what I want through not the whole kit

Should have been more specific sorry :(
