XP 3000+ on A7N8X-X thinks it is a 1800+?

It sounds like you may have received a "re-marked" CPU. Was it unusually
reasonable in price?

Not especially...

Is it possible that my power supply not being sufficient is a
possibility? It's 350W, maybe that's not sufficient for the true
speed?

Is your heatsink mounted the right way?

Is your heatsink mounted the right way?

Yeah.. in fact, been looking at the the cpu temp when it's clocked to
being a xp 3000+.. everything is fine. So overheating isn't a problem
apparently. Also, if I underclock further, the cpu identification
programs just tell me the cpu I have is whatever I set it to be, so I
guess I can't go on what they tell me. Just clocked it up to somewhere
between a XP 1800 and 3000 and that's working fine.

Just upgrade the BIOS to the latest version (1.07 i think)
The BIOS should post it as an XP 3000+ . If not set the FSB speed to 166 in
the BIOS and the multiplier to AUTO

Ok, I was having some problems with my old system so I ordered this
new system:
A7N8X-X
XP 3000+
kingston ddr 400 ram

Says it's a 1800+ and if I try to switch it to settings for 3000+,
usually doesn't make it past the ram countup, or if it does, it
doesn't make it much further than that, before the system locks up.
Kind of scary because sometimes it didn't want to let me back into the
BIOS.

I tried CPUID and WCPUID and they both say it's an AMD 1800+ also. Do
these programs just report what is in the BIOS, or do they actually
identify the CPU?

It does run fine as a 1800+....

Trying to figure out what's up here...

Lysander Lapine

Did you adjust to jumper on the mobo from 100mhz to 166 mhz?
TH

well, the settings are 400/333/266 and 200 only. I have the jumper set
to 400/333/266.

It is 1.07. It still thought it was 1800+ though. Changing the FSB
speed to 166 is what I did, and setting the multiplier to AUTO.
However, now it comes up as somewhere inbetween the XP 1800+ and 3000+
speeds.... it simply says it's a 1.75 GHz Athlon processor. This is an
improvement though, and it seems to be running really cool, since it's
a bit underclocked so I guess it's not that bad.. maybe there will be
another BIOS release later that'll fix it- I could live with this
speed until then at least, it's still a big improvement over what I
upgraded from.

Thanks for the advice, and everyone else that responded.

Do you have the amd3000+/400 or the /333 cpu?
Did you flash to 1.07? Did it act funny before the flash, too?
Something is hosed!
Bios setting, the flash itself, or the mobo/cpu???????????
The answers you get will only reflect the details provided,
garbage in, garbage out!

What I ordered was the amd3000+/400.

I didn't flash to 1.07, but it was already 1.07 when I got it.

If you have an XP3000+/400 your FSB should be set to 200 with the
multiplier (use Menu instead of Auto) set to 10.5. That should get it.

I tried doing this earlier. It's recognized as a XP 3000+ then, but
unfortunately it either reboots or locks up anywhere from after the
ram count or halfway through loading windows. Checking the
temperature, it's not a temperature problem, so I have no idea what
could be causing random lockups or reboots at that speed.

Avoid 10.5 multipliers since Bartons don't like that one for some
reason. It's a known issue. Lock your RAM to 100% and AGP to 66Mhz if
that board has those options.

Go back into bios, you are missing something! Leave FSB set to 200!
Auto multiplier, I had to reload XP on a P4C-800 Deluxe when I first loaded
with the wrong settings! Relax the ram settings, unless you are using
Kingston hyperx. Simply stating kingston ram doesn't say much.

I had the same problem with my new XP2700+ showing as an XP1500+

I had to make hjanges in the BIOS (Unset AUTO setect).

I can set my RAM to By SPD or Auto. I can set the AGP to 66Mhz though.
I tried this, but it didn't seem to let it run at 3000.

Was trying with the reloading of XP, however it always either locked
up during the setup/repair process or rebooted itself.

To get the Memory Frequency to sync (100%) you have to set System
Performance to User Defined. Also change Memory Timing to User Defined
also, which will allow you to relax the timings.

Hi,
I've been following this thread for a while.......
Are you SURE you got the PC-3200 memory? Was it on the outside of the box,
or on the chips itself? I guess what I'm trying to say is did you get what
you paid for? Is it the "good stuff" or the plain vanilla Kingston? I'm not
real fond of Kingston memory, I had some of the plain vanilla kind and it
was SSSLLLOOOOOOWWWW in fact when I got my 2500+ Barton and the same board
you have I had all kinds of problems until I got some really good memory.
I personally, would RMA that memory and spend the extra bucks to get
Corsair, it's a known good performer on this type board. I myself found a
good deal on some memory at Komusa, they have an excellent reseller rating
from resellerratings.com. It's PC-3500 with copper heatsinks, and works
great at 200MHz FSB, it should actually run a little faster but I got it
just for the overhead room, just in case it was not quite as fast as
advertised.

But in the mean time, what I did to get my 2500+ to run at 3200+ was run the
memory at a lower speed, in other words a percentage of the FSB, it did work
that way. You might try that just to get the proc. to the correct speed.
Just a my 2 cents worth, for what it's worth.
