A7N8X Deluxe

Bill Harvey

Hi,

I have an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe Revision 2.00 BIOS 1005
At the moment I have an Athlon 1800XP but would like to fit a faster CPU

The choice seems a bit confusing, pricewise I've been looking at the
following:-
Athlon XP 2800+ Barton 333 FSB Euros 128.00
Athlon XP 3000+ Barton 333 FSB Euros 174.00
Athlon XP 3000+ Barton 400 FSB Euros 172.00

How do the above compare with my 1800
I think the one I should opt for is the 3000+ Barton 400FSB

As far as memory is concerned I have 512MB PC3200? 333Mhz
Regards

Bill Harvey

I would say the 2800+ would be the best choice, there's no point really
spending the extra ~?45 for a minimal performance increase.
How do the above compare with my 1800

Ever heard of the term "trailblaze" ; )

I went from 1800 to 2800, and there was a hugely noticable difference

Your RAM is either going to be PC3200 (400MHz) or PC2700 (333MHz), if you
have the latter you will have to buy new RAM to run the 3000+ w/ 400FSB at
100%, but if it is PC2700 you'll be able to run at 100% with the 2800+ or
3000+ w/ 333FSB

I went from an XP1900 to an XP2500 and am running at 200x11=XP3200...this is
also on an A7N8X-Deluxe Rev 2.0 running Uber Bios 1007...performance...no
comparrison..I have a second system with a DFI AD77 running RAID0 with a
Barton2500 running at XP2800 . Also PC3200 is 400 mhz...PC2700 is 333...if
you go with the XP3200 you need new RAM if you have 333

Thanks for the info.

I have three choices:

OPTION 1 - FASTEST
Athlon XP3000+ FSB 400 180.00
2 x 256MB Twinmos 400Mhz 96.00
Artic Copper Silent TC2 19.00
Total 295.00

OR

OPTION 2 - MEDIUM (Less future redundancy, future upgrade change to 400Mhz
DDR Ram)
Athlon XP3000+ FSB 400 180.00
Artic Copper Silent TC2 19.00
Total 199.00
(Continue to use my 2 x 256MB PC2700 DDR 333Mhz, swap out later)

OR

OPTION 3 - COST EFFECTIVE (Largest future redundancy, future upgrade means
replacing CPU)
Athlon XP2800 FSB 333 128.00
Artic Copper Silent TC2 19.00
Total 147.00

Will the XP 3000 400FSB run OK albeit slower with 333Mhz DDR Ram?
Is option 3 cost effective? what about speed increase compared to my XP1800.

All the best

You could run at 5:4 with the FSB and RAM, but I've heard that NForce mobos
really dont like running at anything other than 1:1 (FSB and Memory being
matched).

If it were me I really wouldn't bother buying new RAM etc just to be able to
run a processor 200PR faster, compared to your 1800 I doubt you would notice
a difference between the 2800+ and 3000+, complete waste of time, especially
if you're just going to get the same amount of RAM again.

Also I wouldn't bother buying a new heatsink, just get the retail box of the
processor, the one supplied is surprisingly good, quiet and does the job
well.

I would say that in the future the amount of RAM (512mb) would be outdated
some time before the 2800+, so its worth just getting the 2800+, and keeping
your current RAM.

I went from an 1800+ to a 2800+, and as I said before there was a noticable
speed increase!

Thanks for the advice.

I'll opt for the XP2800 333 Mhz and stick with my 333Mhz DDR Ram.

The CPU from my PC shop comes without a heatsink, and the one on my XP1800
is only a "Titan" can't remember the exact model and I'd have to switch off
my PC to find out.

the shop is offering three types:-
Thermaltake
Artic Cooling Copper Silent 2
Artic Cooling Copper Silent 2 TC

The shopkeeper has offered me the Arctic Cooling TC at the same price as the
rest.
I believe this is a self regulating Fan??

The Thermaltake comes with a thermal strip whereas the Artic Cooling comes
with a tube of Thermal Paste, I've got a good guide on installing Heatsinks
and have done it several times before.

I'm not really on top of the "best" heatsinks etc at the moment, so it would
probably be best to post a new topic asking specifically about heatsinks,
otherwise as long as the people at the shop are fairly well clued up (there
are some right retards running some pc shops nowadays), go with the one they
suggest. Just remember you are going to notice the noise more than a couple
of degrees of CPU temperature.

For some reason holding down the DEL key while booting doesn't work.
I see Starting Setup and it skips right on to the rest of the boot
sequence.

This is with a 2200+ and 512 ram Though I don't think that has
anything to do with the problem.
Damaged BIOS??? Could flashing help?

Thanks,
Mel

Mel,
Do you have one of the new MS keyboards with an FLock key? If so, press it
first.

Nope mine's older.
I finally followed the advice I give to most of my technically
challanged friends and read the F***ing manual which said to hold
down DEL at power up (I was waiting until the drive summary was
displayed as I've done with every other computer I've known)
This works but I'm still mystified since STARTING SETUP does come up
if the DEL key is pressed later even though the boot sequence
continues unhindered.
Thanks anyway.

Try it whilst doing a warm reboot instead of a cold boot. (I had this
problem when I had the video ram cached.)
