Writing a Word Doc to diss and getting a Read-Only document

I am using Microsoft Windows XP Professional w/SP2. I tried writing a Word
document saved on my hard drive to my DVD/CD-RW drive. I used both the
Windows Wizard and Sonic utilities to burn the document to CD. Despite
checking that my original document was not read-only, both utilites resulted
in a read-only document burned to my CD. I set a write-speed of "fastest"
and used a 24x CD-RW disc (I'm using an HP notebook and am told by the
manufacturer that my combo DVD/CD drive speed is 8x/48x). Can anyone tell me
why I'm getting a read-only document when copying a non-read-only document to
CD?

When you record a file to a CD, it becomes "Read Only"
because a CD-ROM is "Read Only Memory". If you
wish to make changes to the file, copy the file back to
your hard drive, make your changes, then record the new
file to the CD.

I thought it was a software problem, but it's quite logical that a Read Only Memory device would save a document as read-only. Elementary stuff, but I failed to see it. Thank you for opening my eyes, Gordon.

Thank you, Carey. As I just wrote to Gordon, this is elementary stuff but I
needed him and you to open my eyes. But I do have a question: My mistake
was that I opened the Word document saved on CD, made corrections and then
tried to save a read-only document. How would I "copy" the file saved on CD
as "read-only" to my hard drive so that it can be opened as a non-read-only
document in Word which I could then "save" to hard drive and copy back to CD?

Copy the document to your HDD, right-click on it, choose "Properties" and
uncheck the Read-Only attribute at the bottom. You will then have an
editable document.
