Burning a CD

This is a new technology for me. Please forgive me my basic questions. I am
running WXP version 5.1 with Service Pack 2 on a Thinkpad (Lenovo) Z60t with
CD-RW/DVD-R Multi-Burner drives. I also have Sony's 'Sonic' software on board
to do burning, although one of my questions (below) wil be why I can't use
the WXP burning process, even though I'm not sure that I'm actually burning
the CDs!

I have tried both CD-RW discs (Maxell) and CD-R discs (Staples) to test how
things work (or do not) and appreciate that they are lower end products. I
have been able to get both types to work sometimes (and sometimes not), which
I can test further by inserting them into my older 380 Thinkpad laptop with a
CD-ROM player (sometimes a CD-R reads fine; and now I know that the CD-RWs
will not - no problem).

So here are my questions:

1. Regardless of which burnng process I can/might use (WXP or Sonic), does a
new disc always have to be formated? (i.e. by going into My Computer and with
the disc inserted in the CD drive, right clicking on the drive and following
the process, including DLA'ing it))

2. In my initial attempts (and not being aware of the Sonic program
on-board), I simply put a disc (either a CD-R or CD-RW disc) into the drive
and then went into my Docs and right-clicked a document and sent it to the
drive. I then opened the CD drive and could see and open the document
apparently on the CD, at least when the CD was in my computer (and if it was
a CD-R disc, in my older 380 laptop as well, sometimes). But I have a
distinct impression that the disc is not burned since the process of sending
the document over was so instantaneous. When I opened the CD drive window,
there were no instructions in the left-hand panel that I should "write these
files to a CD" and no Wizard ever showed up. But I could see the files in the
window and open them with a click. Are they really burned onto the CD or just
waiting to be? How to burn them using WXP, if I can at all ?

3. When I use the Sonic program, things seem to go well but if I use a CR-RW
disc and want to add a second document later, I'm told that the disc has to
be reformated and the previous files will be erased. I imagine that this has
got something to do with having 'closed' the disc when I finished burning the
first document. I'm wondering if someone can tell me what that term really
means and how I can keep the disc open for further document.

That's all and thanks in advance. Perhaps there a good website that can lead
me carefully through it ?

Recommend that you purchase latest version of Nero and most, if not all,
of your CD burning will be much easier. It allows you to set your CD burning
to burn additional items. CD-RW should not require formatting unless you
wish too. I have a Sony desktop with MCE2005, but I still use Nero for all
my burning requirements.

I imagine that this has got something to do with having 'closed' the
disc when I finished burning the first document.

You don't burn the doc you burn the cd.

Once a cd is burned then it cannot be undone, have anything added to it or
anything deleted from it.
I'm wondering if someone can tell me what that term really
means and how I can keep the disc open for further document.

Mabe when you close it you are actually burning it.

I've never used the software you mention but there should be some options
so you can add files at a later time or somehting like that. Mabe a data
cd that can have mutiple sessions?

I would recommend free deepburner. It asks you what you want to do, simply
crete data cd, then create multisession disk, I believe is how
multisession cds can be created with deepburner.

Drag you files into the window, or browse for you files to add to the cd.
