Error message when burning cd's

Can anyone help me resolve this really irritating problem. I have an acer
aspire 1690 laptop running on Windows XP. Basically i used to be able to
burn data and audio to either cd-r or cd-rw discs without any problems.
Recently though every time I start a burn the disc is ejected with error
message saying try another disc or to lower the burn speed. Tried this and
still unable to burn discs. Tried burning with NTI, Nero, Windows Itunes but
none of them will let me burn. Just comes back to the same error message
that there is either a fault with the cd or too fast a speed to burn. The
drive is a combined CD/DVD drive - Matshita uj-845d.

Buy a CD/DVD lens cleaner. Turn off all unnecessary programs that load at
startup. Try a new batch of CD blanks. The ones you have may be defective.

And, of course, the drive may be failing.
