Word 2001 for Mac: Toolbars Lead to Dead Ends

In microSoft Office for Mac 2001, Part of my menu options in Word seem to be missing.

When I go into the top Menu of my Word application and select any of the following menu's I end up at a dead end.

Case in point: When I select INSERT/BREAK > all I end up with is the "BREAK >" option, there is nowhere further to go, example Page Break, Section Break, etc. Similarly When trying to use the following tools I can go to INSERT/AUTOTEXT >; INSERT/PICTURE >; INSERT/HTML OBJECT >; VIEW/TOOLBARS >; FILE/SEND TO >; TOOLS/TRACK CHANGES >; TOOLS/MACRO >; TABLE/INSERT >; TABLE/DELETE >; TABLE/SELECT >; TABLE/AUTOFIT >. Each of these menus result in a dead end. I am unable to insert Page Breaks, Macros, Columns, Rows, Toolbars, etc. when trying to access any of these tools. This has been the case since I installed MS Office 2001 for Mac about three years ago. I keep hoping I will stumble on the solution, but after three years I still haven't resolved the issue. (I am getting more flexibillity and use out of Word 6 on my older Mac (which I installed in '96), then I have been able to get out of Word:Mac 2001. What am I doing wrong? Why can I not access these tools?

Please reply to me directly as I may not know how to access this WEB site again.

Thanks for any assistance.

My System:

B&W PowerMac G3/400
1 GB RAM
MAC OS 9.2.2 & MAC OSX 10.2.8
(The problem also occurred with earlier versions of Mac OS, hence is not a factor of OS 9.2)
MS Office for Mac 2001 with 9.04 Update Patch.

Let's get clear what you mean by a dead end. There are three types of menu
items in Word for Windows; I'm guessing the conventions are the same in
Word:Mac.

1. Simple menu items: you click on them and something happens. An example
would be View | Ruler. You click on that and the ruler becomes visible (or
invisible). You can recognize these menu items by the fact that they are
simple commands with no punctuation following them.

2. Menus items that open submenus. You can recognize these by the > arrow
after the command. An example would be View | Toolbars >. Click on that and
a submenu opens.

3. Menus that open dialogs. These menu commands are followed by ellipses. An
example would be View | Zoom...

The menu items you list are a mixture of 2 and 3. Are you saying that when
you click on these you do not get a submenu or dialog?

Ron, check this link:

I'm really sorry you've been suffering this for three years. In general,
when a Mac program messes up, deleting the prefs file (instructions in link
above) will fix a myriad of things.

See here for gateway to Mac-specific ngs for help with Office problems.

Do not, however, expect people to reply to you directly as they usually
won't. You can use Google Groups to search newsgroups for your name as

Hey Suzanne,

MacWord 2001 has a missing menus problem just like WinWord! :) (though I
haven't hit it yet, heavens knows why not) I think half-menus are the start
of it.
