WinZP Keeps Installing Drivers During Upgrade

Am trying to upgrade my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro card from driver ver. 3.8 to
3.10. After I uninstall the 3.8 drivers and control panel, I re-boot.
After re-boot, WinXP automatically installs it's own internal drivers,
without even asking me.

So, I went ahead and ran the SETUP program for the 3.10 drivers. It
seemed to go OK, but I'd feel better if WinXP didn't install it's own
drivers.

Is there any way to prevent WinXP from installing it's own drivers,
after a re-boot? Thanks for the help.

just click the cancel when xp tries to update. it will apply standard vga
drivers, but it has to apply something to you can see. than run ati setup.

If XP did not install video(generic) drivers how would you see the screen??

Thanks for the reply. But as I mentioned in my first email, I don't get
prompted to install new drivers. If I did, I would say NO. WinXP
installs them automatically. I have no idea if they are generic VGA
drivers, which allow me to see the screen, or if they are built-in ATI
drivers that come with XP.

Thanks for the reply. That makes sense. But how do I know if WinXP
installed generic VGA drivers, or it's own built-in ATI drivers?
Anyway, since I have run SETUP with the 3.10 drivers, everything seems
to be going OK.

I have not noticed any improvements in speed. All my benchmark programs
seem to run about the same as with 3.8, including 3DMark03,
3DMark2001SE, and AquaMark. Oh well. Makes you wonder what the
upgrades really do. I don't think I'm max'd out on the CPU/Mobo, since
I have a P4/3GHz, 800 FSB, 1 Gig RAM. But, maybe I am max'd out on the
PC hardware. Anyway, thanks again.
