Winzip clone

Don't know if anybody's recommended this, but it handles more file
formats than Winzip and is almost identical. Loads real fast. The only
downside is that you can't drag and drop from its window into an
Explorer folder (not a big deal, really). Still, it does .rar files,
unlike Winzip. Also creates unlimited SEs. If you're interested, you'd
better download it now before it goes commercial like Powerarchiver
did. IZArc:

On a related subject, I am a happy user of Ultimate zip and have noticed
a problem when decompressing my web server log files. Winzip
decompresses them correctly but UZ seems to trncate the data somehow.

I think I will check this tool out and see if it works better.

I have been using IZarc for about 6 months. It is a fantastic program.
I could not believe it was free. I used to use WinRar, but not any
longer.

IZARC got a thorough blessing on TechTV. Leo pronounced it
the greatest thing since internet. I installed it, and did away with both
my
WinZip and WinRar... haven't had a single problem.

Yeah, I've had *no* problems either. And like Winzip, it preserves
directory structures when expanding files.

*I'm* sold on it!

Is it that indentical? This is important. I found it hard to wean my sister
from winzip using offerings like 7zip, Zipgenius, powerarchiver, etc
because they found the interface too unfamilar and promptly reinstalled a
evalution copy of winzip.

the main feature list on that page says ' Full Drag & Drop support'. do you
perhaps need to change something in whatever Preferences the program has?

If you use this program with WinXP do you have to disable the zip
utility that is built into XP ? If so, how do you do it ?

(top post corrected)
I don't know if IZArc actually reqires disabling XPs hideous
integrated .zip utility, but getting rid of the thing is pretty easy.

* Select Run from the Start Menu.
* Type regsvr32 /u %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll at the prompt,
and click Ok.
* The change will take effect immediately, but you may have to
restart Windows for all traces of the built-in ZIP support to
disappear.

If, at any time, you wish to re-enable Windows XP's built-in ZIP
support, just follow these steps:

* Select Run from the Start Menu.
* Type regsvr32 %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll at the prompt, and
click Ok.
* The change will take effect immediately, but you may have to
restart Windows for all features of the built-in ZIP support to be
available.

I've looked and looked, but could find no such setting. It wasn't
working yesterday, but I got it to work just now.

Hmmm.

Yesterday, it was a group of files with a preserved folder structure
that I was trying to drag.

Go figure. At any rate, I'm glad it seems to be working now.

As far as I can tell, it has the most similar interface I've seen.
However, I don't use Winzip (I've been using Ultimate Zip up until
now) and I'm going by the shot at:

http://www.winzip.com/whatsnew90.htm

for a comparison, since my brother has similar reservations to your
sister's about using a freeware .zip program.

In fact, Winzip and IZArc are *so* similar, just now I had an uneasy
feeling dawn on me that this could be a Huntersoft-like ripoff
(http://www.pricelessware.org/2003/huntersoft.htm). If this is the
case, then I very much regret recommending the program.

IZArc appears to have been created (if that was the case) by a
programmer in Bulgaria, where international copyright laws don't seem
to be enforced as rigorously.

I don't think so, John; it's a couple of years since I last used a
WinZIP trial, but I think the dialogs and the nuts-and-bolts of the
program are sufficiently different, even if the main interface is (I
agree) virtually identical.

For me, the clincher is that Reshacker shows it to be a Delphi
program. I'm pretty sure that WinZIP isn't, and Delphi tends to be a
language favoured by freeware/shareware programmers, whereas
commercial developers use C or one of its variants.

I think we're safe on this one.

One other point; I downloaded this today after seeing it flagged in
the group. Did anyone else get a really slow download? (on a 56K
modem, no faster than 1Kb/sec at any time, from a UK server, with me
also UK-based)

IZArc appears to have been created (if that was the case) by a
programmer in Bulgaria, where international copyright laws don't seem to
be enforced as rigorously.

The Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works was
originally adopted in 1886. The USA was only finally dragged kicking and
screaming into the convention in 1989.

"On October 31, 1988, President Reagan signed a bill amending the
Copyright Act to make it compatible with Berne, and the U.S. took the
formal steps necessary to become a member of Berne. The effective date of
both the Act and the United States' membership in the Berne Convention is
March 1, 1989.

Although the U.S. has been a member of the Universal Copyright Convention
(the "UCC") since 1954, that treaty has been less widely adopted than
Berne, and generally is regarded as conveying less international copyright
protection than membership in Berne. By ratifying Berne, the U.S. will
establish copyright relations with 24 nations who were not members of the
UCC, and with whom it previously had no reciprocal copyright law
relations. The U.S. action brings to 76 the number of countries belonging
to the Berne Convention, leaving the Soviet Union and the Peoples Republic
of China as the only major countries which are not members.

Berne requires its members to meet certain minimum copyright standards,
and Congress was forced to amend the Copyright Act to conform in several
ways. First, under U.S. copyright law, it has long been required that
registration must be attempted (and granted or denied by the Copyright
Office) before a suit for copyright infringement can be maintained. This
condition is inconsistent with Berne, and therefore Congress was forced to
eliminate the registration requirement. However, rather than do so for all
authors, Congress created a two-tiered system: authors of works whose
country of origin is the U.S. still must attempt registration before
commencing litigation, while authors of works where the country of origin
is a Berne member other than the U.S. may bring an enforcement action
without attempting registration.!

Gordon

I prefer PowerArchiver. Version 6 is freeware. I use version 6.11.
As of version 7 it went shareware, but you can still find 6.11 around.
Absolutely wonderful clone of Winzip.

WinZip does.

This morning I tried to create another huge (over 500 mb) zip file and
then turn it into an SE. The zip file worked okay (files were able to
extract fine), but the SE generated an error every time I tried to run
it. I tried to make both files (the .zip, then the SE) several times
and consistently got the same error message.

It's also unclear to me if it is being actively developed (including
addressing existing bugs). The last update was almost 7 months ago.
