Graphical interface for WHOIS and Traceroute

John Corliss

I was looking for such a program the other day so that I could get
away from having to use the command line. What I came up with was Trout:

http://www.foundstone.com/index.htm....htm&subcontent=/resources/proddesc/trout.htm

(link most likely will wrap)

The only problem I've noticed is that when you click on "Help", there
is no help file. Otherwise, it's a pretty nice program.

Anybody else have any recommendations for this type of program?

Incidentally, I notice that this category doesn't exist in the
Pricelessware listings. Am I missing something?

Try this

Here's all their tools:

I wonder why? Maybe e-mail them? Below quoted from their page:
"All questions, comments, and inquiries regarding this software will
only be answered by emailing (e-mail address removed)."

I still prefer to use NetLab 1.4. It hasn't been updated in years and the
programmer's site is long gone but it still works great.
There are still a few place you can find it (468K)-
http://econ.lse.ac.uk/soft/win95/netlab/ (it says NetLab95 which is v1.4)

samspade.org has a downloadable version of their utils, if you haven't
checked that out, too.

online;

No thanks. I want something that runs straight from my computer and
traces others. From the site at the link you provided:

"This VisualRoute Server provides a graphical traceroute from location
Rotterdam (Netherlands) to every location on the Internet."

Fraid that wouldn't do me much good.

I looked at that one (along with all the other ones listed at
http://www.webattack.com/freeware/network/fwtraceroute.html), but I
couldn't figure out what the z axis was supposed to represent. I was
also looking for one that would save the results as a simple text
file. It's got a lot of features though. May be overkill for me, but
I'll check it out more thoroughly.

Sometimes it's nice to have a second opinion.

Good point. Used it just now and it located a bottleneck that I and my
ISP have been after for a while. However, it's an online service
rather than freeware. The actual software costs money.

Sorry, but I try to stay away from programs that syncronize the time.
They never seem to work on my system for some reason. Looks pretty
good otherwise though.

You can get NeoTrace Express (freeware, absorbed by McAfee) here:

That one has a world mapping feature. I'll check it out! Thanks.

Well I checked it out and here is what I think:

The program wants you to tell it where you are. Understandable I
guess, but I don't like that. Should be able to figure that out from
your IP. Next, it wants to connect with a server to access maps or
somesuch. I *really* don't like that and besides, I supposed if the
server is ever shut down, then the program is pretty much worthless.
Next, it wants a person to optionally register. That's not a big deal
since it's optional.

However, in light of the connecting to a server bit, I removed it from
my system without configuring it or trying it out. Others may not
object to this kind of program, but as far as I'm concerned, "no thanks."
