I take it back about Mozilla.

Just installed version 1.5. I first backed up my profile and plugin
folders, but as it turns out I didn't need to. I did NOT uninstall
Mozilla 1.3 and everything worked out effortlessly and flawlessly.
Kept all my saved email and settings. The new built in spell checker
is better than the Beonex one that I had been using.

I had to reinstall Prefbar (a third party addon):

http://prefbar.mozdev.org/

but that was easy. Unfortunately, when I tried to access that link
again just now, the connection was refused for some reason. Probably a
spurious problem though.

Installing the newer vesion of Mozilla was more than easy. Highly
recommended.

I uninstalled Mozilla 1.4 before installing 1.5. The profiles were not
touched though and so I retained all my bookmarks, user.js etc when
installing 1.5. But like you I lost my extensions (because they were
installed in the app folder) and had to reinstall Prefbar etc.

Not sure what the user.js file is. I do have a prefs.js though.

Last night I tried to use Moz to open a few joke Shockwave files that
I've saved on my hard drive. Doing so always starts opening several
instances (40 or so) of Moz and never the Shockwave file. I tried
uninstalling Shockwave and reinstalling it to no effect.

Shockwave files usually worked fine in 1.3 for me.

That's right. Anything written to user.js, which can be done on the fly,
will be copied to prefs.js the next time you start Mozilla.

Hey, you're successfully posting from Rogers. All better, or still
spotty?

OK for now it seems. But I took you up on your suggestion the other
newsgroup and applied for a password to individual.net. Actually, Rogers
has been excellent up until the last two days, and if they had only admitted
there was a problem, I wouldn't be so annoyed.

And don't forget the nice extension that allows you to *edit* the user
files on the fly :) It's called chromedit.

Now today it is spotty again, so I am posting through Individual.net.

Thanks for the tip.

Based on filename, probably identity-specific settings.

I did a search on my whole hard drive for *.js. The results showed
neither any file named "user.js" nor a file ending in .js that started
with my user id.

All my settings are in prefs.js. This could be because I didn't
uninstall Moz 1.3 before upgrading. Giving serious consideration to
doing the install over again, this time with an uninstall preceding it.

Gord,
That link describes the situation in Netscape 7 as far as I can
tell. However, the following from that page seems to apply:

"Usually user.js is not there when you install Netscape, it has to be
created using notepad or any other plaintext editor. Nearly all tips
described here use the user.js, so you might as well create the file now."

Thanks for the tip!

Listed here:

http://extensionroom.mozdev.org/

(the page takes forever to start loading, at least for me.)

Also note this:

http://extensionroom.mozdev.org/#smoothwheel

which DOES work, on my machine. Even allows smooth scrolling in the
mail and news reader.

Thanks for reminding me about the extensions page, Tiger.

Yes, that will do it sometimes. It's a bit of a crapshoot overwritting
your old install. I do it frequently for nightlies, but expect it to
fail. Thus, success is always a pleasant surprise. ;-)

Not a problem. I should have said that although Holger's page is intended
for Netscape, most of the tips, such as user.js, apply to Mozilla as well.

Tsk...Tsk. :)

It is always recommended that you uninstall the previous version before
installing a new one. Just the install directory, not the profiles directory.

Why don't you use IrfanView to view the shockwave files?
