WinXP Outlook 2003: Unable to Export Contacts to CSV File

N

nnylg

Something odd is going on.

When I try to export Contacts

(File-Import/Export-Outlook...-Export to a file-Comma Seperated Values
(Windows)

The only folder to export from is an obscure PST file I created a few years
back, at the same time I created many other PST files, all of which are in
the same location, noe of which show up - only this one.

Why can I only see one PST file? Why can't I see anything related to a
Contacts file?

Windows Explorer has been taking forever to show folders lately, and I've
been getting periodic error messages stating:

"svchost.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x009a9eec" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The
memory could not be "written".

Click on OK to terminate the program

Click on CANCEL to debug the program"

Could the file export problem be part of a larger problem?

Much thanks,

Dennis

Only the PSTs in your mail profile will appear in the export dialogue. You
can create as many PSTs as you want, but if you don't have them open in the
mail profile, Outlook won't know about them.

There is no "Contacts file". All of your Outlook data, your mail, your
contacts, your tasks, your calendar, etc., are all kept in the same PST.
When you click FIle>Import and Export>Export to a file>Next, choose "Comma
Separated Values (Windows)", then click Next, you're presented with the
contents of the current PSTs open in your mail profile, with the default
selection indicating the folder you had open when you began the export
process. Select the Contacts folder and click Next to export that folder.

Do you have any disconected network drives?

D: That's part of the problem; I have at least 10 PST files open; only one
shows up.
There is no "Contacts file". All of your Outlook data, your mail, your
contacts, your tasks, your calendar, etc., are all kept in the same PST.

D: And yet only one random PST file shows up in the dialogue.
When you click FIle>Import and Export>Export to a file>Next, choose "Comma

D: Done

Next to export that folder.

D: Unfortunately nothing appears other than a single PST file that contains
no calendar or contact info.
Do you have any disconected network drives?

D: Have gone through and deleted all outdated Network addesses. The error
message continues to pop up.

Thanks for your help, Brian,

Dennis

Click File>Data FIle Management. How many do you see?

I highly doubt it's "random".

Click Tools>E-mail Accounts>Next. What appears in the "Deliver new e-mail
to the following location" drop-down at the lower left?

I don't have a good response for this.

D: Twenty, including My Folders, Hotmail, etc.
I highly doubt it's "random".

D: I say that because it is no different from other PST files - similar
location, size and content.

D: My Folders
I don't have a good response for this.

D: No worries - am pursuing this in another forum.

Much thanks, Brian,

Wow! Are you using them all?
D: My Folders

When you try to export, is the Contacts folder you see the one in My
Folders? Have you temporarily removed some (or all but My Folders) of those
data files from your mail profile to see if that makes a difference?

Hi Brian;

D: I'm an architect so I have many e-mails with large attachments. I've had
the in-box max out on many occasion, so have filed e-mails by year, and also
by project. I don't need immediate access to each PST at all times, so if
there was a way to store them so Outlook didn't have to load them all the
time, that would probably help, yes?

D: I don't even see a Contacts folder. The only folder I see is one single
PST file that stores the e-mails from one project.

D: I haven't done anything yet. I'm guessing you are suggesting relocating
most of the PST files to another directory - this would prevent them from
loading, yes? I'll try it!

Thanks,

In Outlook, right-click on the root of any PST other than your delivery
location PST (i.e., the default PST) and choose Close. That will remove it
from Outlook and your mail profile. If you need to reference it again in
the future, ass it back in with File>Open>Outlook Data File.

What view of the Navigation Pane are you using? If you're using the "Mail"
view, it's natural you won't see any folders other than those containing
mail items. You must choose the Contacts or Folder List view to see
Contacts folders.

Heck no, that's NOT what I'm suggesting! You'll damage your mail profile
that way. Just close some of them as I describe above ot use the Mail
applet in Control Panel to remove some of them.

+ + + + + + +

D: Welllll.... I moved most of the PST files to another directly, THEN
right-click/deleted the root and chose CLOSE. Outlook asked for location of
each PST file, and I cancelled out of most of them. And yes, after doing
this, I was able to see the contents of the delivery location file, which
included contacts!!

I guess I can put the PST files back in their original location, altho it
looks like I can open them from this alternate location, which works better
for me in terms of backing up the files. And so far, the mail profile seems
intact - it is functioning normally.

Thanks much for helping me clarify what the problem really was - overloading
Outlook with too much data.

Good work, Brian - thanks!
