WindowsXP Pro - prevent shutdown

Mark Hanley

I have a standalone Dell WinXP PC which I need to keep switched on. Various
cleaners where I work keep turning it off at the power button. Is there any
way I can prevent the shutdown or make it say pop up a box saying 'Are you
sure?'

Thanks in advance.

I would just let the cleaners at the office know that they are not allowed
to touch your computer. It is your property(or the companys) and they need
to follow your rules. If they can't keep there hands off it, then find a new
cleaning crew. At my main work office, even the owner of the company knows
not to dare touch my computer(I'm the systems admin). Set the rules and be
done with it.

Here lies the problem..

The cleaner I suspect to be turning it off is kind of the reason it needs to
stay on. The PC has a card swipe reader attached to it for the cleaners to
swipe in and out on their shifts. The only reason my boss asked me to set up
the swipe to run alongside paper based clocking in was because this
particular cleaner is not at all truthful with his hours. We are a school
and don't have loads of spare cash so it's kind of important to try and
avoid this.

I wondered if there might be a way to make it not just a case of hitting the
button to turn off. One idea I have is to permanently leave a floppy in the
drive so that NortonAV moans when you try to shutdown. I just wondered if
there was a more elegant solution.

Mark.

Settings/Control panel/power settings/advanced/power
button -> do nothing.

But then they'll probably pull the plug!

I agree with purplehaze - tell them not to mess with
computers.

Try this:
control panel, power options, advanced tab, under the Power buttons area set
it to do nothing when the power button is pushed.

In Control Panel - Power Options, Advanced page, you can select 'When I
press the Power button on the Computer'. One option is 'Do Nothing'
