WinXP Pro Shutdown vs Power-off!!

Is there a way to PREVENT the computer power-off sequence generated by
WinXP Pro shutdown? I'd like to be able to control that myself rather
than let the system do it.

Thanks.

How would you know that the necessary programs, that are running in the
background, are shut down properly before shutting off the computer? How
about the dozens of services that must be shutdown in sequence?

I really suggest you allow the "system" to shut down the computer or you are
likely to cause problems (loss of information, corrupt files etc.) by trying
to bypass the system!

I think you can simply turn off the Hibernation setting by

Control panel > Power Setting > Hibernation (then uncheck the "Hibernation"
selection)

I've been doing it that way for almost twenty years! The AC socket is
controlable. I can power-up my system based upon time, or manually.
As an example from the early days, my main system would power-up at
4:00am, defrag all the drives (there were 6, counting the Burnoullis),
perform a backup, log onto the net and download the mail and the NY
Times crossword puzzle, and then shut down Windows. Thereafter a
power-off signal was sent to the socket.

Nope. That didn't do it - either on the notebook or the desktop
systems. Anyone else have a thought? MS MVP's?
Thanks.
