Windows XP will not boot from hard drive, cannot boot from CD

I have a user whose XP box will not boot. It reaches the XP splash screen,
and reboots automatically. I've tried each Safe Mode option, to no avail.
I have tried booting from the CD, and after it loads the necessary drivers,
it will eventually just stop, and sit indefinitely. I've never been able to
get to the point where I can access the recovery console.

Help?

Try booting from a free Live Linux CD such as Knoppix.

I am having the some problem, with a little bit of a twist. The laptop of a
friend, which is 2 years, and has been running WinXP Professional all that
time, suddenly will not boot into Windows XP. It also gets to the Windows XP
splash screen, then reboots...consistantly loops. Cannot boot into safe mode,
and attempts to boot from CD and reinstall WinXP stall right after the
drivers load. The twist is....this is not the case with Windows Vista. I have
successfully installed Vista Ultimate...no problem.
I flashed the BIOS with the latest version, no change. No idea what it could
b.
Any help would b apreciated.

Let me add some things...
When I began working on my friends laptop I didn't initially attempt to
install WinXP....I immediately installed Vista Ultimate. I then attempted to
install WinXP into a virtual disk....install got to where it said press F2
for automated recovery (?), then it stalled. I then attempted to install
WinXP directly to the hard drive, overwriting Vista Ultimate....I got an
error, "Hard Drive Not Found". SO...THAT, is the complete scenario.
