Cannot Boot From Xp Disc

P

PAMMIEPOOH

Okay here it goes...My laptop (Toshiba Satellite M45 S2652) started the
unmountable drive error. I am unable to go into safe mode & for some reason
am unable to boot from my Windows XP disk to go into RECOVERY MODE. At first
I thought maybe it was my hard drive, so i took it out and put it into my
husbands PIII, 512MB Toshiba. I put in my XP disc and voila! I was able to
access Recovery Mode, run chkdsk /r and boom xp was running like a charm.
However, when I put my hard drive back into MY laptop, I get the oxoooooo7b
error. I took my hard drive back out and put it in my husbands laptop and
installed recovery console on my hard drive as an option to boot on startup.
Then I put my hard drive back into my laptop and boot into recovery console
from it. Then I switch to my D:\ drive to try and run setup, winnt and all to
no avail. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

This indicate a conflict in the I/O out controller that been used in the
boot up of the Machine.
Can you Try System Restore when it been mounted on your Husband Laptop and
then try it on your laptop. What you get?

How old this Laptop?
Did you scan for malware and viruses?

Get the Diagnostic utilities from your Laptop manufacturer Website for your
laptop specs.

i double checked my bios and from what i can tell all my settings are
correct. my bios is set for my cd-rom to be read first, followed by my hard
drive. I don't have a floppy. I will try the suggestion earlier about doing
system restore on my husbands laptop. My laptop is about 5 years old. The
hard drive that's in here is the second one that I purchased nearly 2 years
ago to increase storage. I'm running Windows
XP home SP 2. My virus scan software (Avast) is up to date and detected
nothing. I also ran my spyware program (ScanSpyware). They are both current
with their applicable updates. I haven't added any software or hardware to
it either.

well, at least we know
the hard disk is functional
on a different computer.

so on its own computer,
its either the boot sector
or a physical hardware
problem.

like you had done a
chkdsk /r on it,

retry with the following
ones:

chkdsk /p
fixmbr
fixboot

-------------

I also looked up that
stop code and here
is the link for your
convenience.

How wise is it to run a System Restore on a computer that the restore
points were not created on?

Switching the hard drive from one computer to another is likely to do
more harm than good. It is one thing to place the drive in a second
computer as a slave drive to read and copy files but what you are doing
is not in my opinion a clever way to try to resolve your problem.

Please provide a copy of the Stop Error report.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.Do not re-enable automatic restart on system
failure.

Hope this helps.

That's an interesting thought! For a home user wouldn't it be more
practical to check the BIOS to see if the drive is recognised?

I agree with Gerry, first thing I would do is to see if the drive is
recognised in the BIOS.

I'm assuming that you used the same XP CD to install the recovery console.

I would set the BIOS to boot only from CD and disable everything else
and if your BIOS has the option to boot other device, I would disable
that also.

Also when you boot to the recovery console from the hard drive is D:\
definately the mount point for the XP CD? Can you see the files on the
CD when you type dir D:\ ?

Hello,

The user has already replied to another post that he/she has checked the
BIOS.

A failing CD-ROM drive does not mean it would not be detected in BIOS. It
could be a weak laser or lens.

Gerry,
I know where you comming from and what you are aiming at! But the OP, she
said the HDD drive working as Charm on the other Laptop and if she performed
the Restore then she didn't access apps on this laptop then she mounted it
back in her Laptop, she may have access and from there she can troubleshoot
further to resolve the issue.

I know your worries about Different BIOS, Mobo drivers...etc on the other
Laptop Mobo, but the OP tried many times with her Laptop case with no
success. Hence the only way you can solve this either by Restoring the system
( similar to rstoring the Registry by slaving the HDD in another machine,
remember!).

For the OP, it can be a memory gone Bad or lots of Dust in fens of the
cooling Fan underneath the CPU and you need gently to Dust it out with a
Compressed Air cane antistatic or with a Hover!!!

Seen it in the past, a HDD MBR and the FAT table gone bust and none of the
repair or clean install was able to repair/correct the FAT table/MBR that was
from the Heat in my case.

Also, I agree with 'Gerry' about not using the HDD again in the other
Laptop, other than troubleshooting you should not mix up or you will end up
with both useless!

It is relatively easy not to miss a problem if you are looking at the
BIOS infrequently. On the first visit the Boot Sequence order was the
specific point to be checked. Looking a second time specifically to see
whether the CD drive is recognised is still worth doing.

Your second point I can readily accept.
