Windows XP BSOD

Okay I have a Toshiba Satellite M45 S2652 Laptop that runs Windows XP. It
started giving me stop error BSOD's whenever I would start the unit. I
thought perhaps my HDD was going bad since it is kind of old now. I took it
out and put it in my husbands Toshiba & it worked fine. I placed it back in
mine and attempted a repair. I kept getting the same errors. So on a lark,
to see if maybe my motherboard had gone bad, I took out the HDD of my Gateway
laptop that I let my kids play on. The Toshiba booted up fine. Here's the
kicker.....the Gateway laptop is running Windows 98 SE. Now when I place my
Windows XP HDD in my rickety old Gateway, it boots up fine. It just doesnt
want to work with my Satellite. Any idea what could be causing the problem?
I don't want to wipe my drive since I know it is working. I will if I have to
though.
