Windows XP User Rights

Mike

I am trying to allow our users to redirect LPT1 to a
networked printer. If the user is in the Domain Admins
group on the AD server, redirection works. If the user is
in the Domain Users group on the AD server, redirection
fails.

Redirection of LPT1 only fails on Windows XP PC's, Windows
2000 works fine. I read somewhere that only an
Administrator can redirect LPT1 on Windows XP machines.
So I tried redirecting LPT2 on a Domain Users PC, and it
worked. But I have to redirect LPT1 because of some
really old applications.

Is there a security setting in AD, or on the local PC,
that grants Domain Users the ability to redirect LPT1?

Thanks,
Mike

Hello Mike,

Note that in Windows XP, non-administrative users cannot map an LPT port to
a network printer path when the LPT port exists on the computer as a
physical parallel port

Thank you Diana. I went into Device Manager and disabled
the LPT1 port, I can now redirect LPT1 to a networked
printer as a User.

Thanks again,
Mike

Good Morning Mike,

I'm glad that worked for you.

Thanks for using Microsoft Products.
