Windows XP Update won't update...

Hi,

I am running Windows XP SP2 on my work desktop, using IE 6.0.2900.2180. I
have NortonAntivirus running, and so far have performed a full scan with no
problems repored. I looked at the Updates History on my computer and the
last good update took place on Thursday October 13 2005 - with no problems.

The reason I am writing is that I try to do an update of the current patch
and I am unable to get the update to get started. I have gone to IE,
selected Update and the Microsoft Update page opens. It does its gyrations
and asks if I want to do an Express or Custom upgrade. I click on Express
and the 'check' goes through. After a few seconds, a window opens stating
"Software Upgrade for Some Windows Components Requierd". I click on the
Download and Install button and then a window opens entitled "Installing
Updates". This is where the problem is.

The window displays an Installation Status. It freezes at "Initializing
Installation...". I have even left this running overnight and nothing
hapens. I look at Task Manager and see Microsoft Update running, but there
is no movement on the progress bar on the "Installing Updates" dialog
window.

Any help would be highly appreciated. I have done several searches on
Google for this, but so far I cannot seem to find anything that can remotely
resemble what I have. Please, any suggestions would be helpful.

Regards,
joe

Carey,

thank you for the quick reply. However, you might want to double check your
links. The first one does indeed find an article in the Knowladgebase.
However, the second and third links are no longer available.

joe

You have been playing with fire!

SP2 is no longer supported by Microsoft in the form of security updates.
Norton, which is probably one of the worst antivirus programs to run in
the first place, will have limited ability to protect you if your OS
doesn't have the most up-to-date security patches.

All the info you will need to upgrade to SP3 and then to install any
subsequent security updates can be found here:

http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general/msg/b3c6cdad334db4f8?hl=en

More or less, the following needs to be done:

1. Obtain the SP3 installation file. The easiest way is to download the
WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe file from this site:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...A8-5E76-401F-BE08-1E1555D4F3D4&displaylang=en

2. Physically disconnect from the Internet.

3. Totally disable Norton and any other security programs that normally
run in the background because they can and do interfere with the
upgrade!

4. Upgrade to SP3 by running the WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe file
you had downloaded earlier.

5. Re-enable your security programs.

6. Re-connect to the Internet.

7. Download and install all the remaining security updates by visiting
the Windows Update web site.

Also, consider uninstalling Norton and replacing it with a superior
program. Excellent free programs include Avast and Avira AntiVir. Eset's
NOD32 is an excellent AV program that isn't free. Be sure to run
anti-malware programs such as MalwareBytes' AntiMalware and
SUPERAntiSpyware. Regarding firewalls, there is no need to run software
firewalls such as ZoneAlarm because the firewall that comes with Windows
Xp is more than adequate.

Keep your system patched! If your last update was in October, 2005, you
very well may have introduced any number of malicious programs!

One last thing:

Once you are running SP3, you really should upgrade IE6 to IE7 or IE8!
The newer versions are much more secure!

You forgot to mention that after installing SP3, one should reboot TWICE.
