Windows XP Start up

I had not been able to use my vaio laptop for about a month and the last time
I was able to use it it started up with no problems.
Now when I start it up it gives me a screen in Dos that says:
We apologize for the inconvenience , but Windows did not start successfully...
It gives me the following options to highlight and choose;
* Safe Mode
• Safe Mode with Networking
• Safe Mode with Command Prompt
• Last Known Good Configuration
• Start Windows Normally
Unfortunately when I choose any of these options it seems like for a moment
it is going to do something but then freezes up. I have to shut down to get
back to the aforementioned point.

A month? And you're now just getting around to attempt to fix it?

Contact Sony, but London to brick they tell you to reinstall the operating system.
