Windows XP Start up problems
happens at least 80% of the time i turn the computer on
I turn the computer off properly using shutdown

then when i come back and turn it on it starts to load
then i get

"checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is FAT32

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency.
You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly
recomended that you continue."

It then takes about 45 mins to complete check

And then once windows is loaded i get a pop-up box error
saying

"Error loading C:Windows\Downloaded Program
Files\bridge.dll
The Specified module could not be found"

can some one please help as i have exhausted my knowledge
trying to solve this but to no avail

Hi, Andy.

You should be able to access the second link in the earlier post if you
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.winfavorites.html

That long URL "wrapped" in the earlier post and clicking on it got you only
the first line. You could also have reassembled the two parts of the URL by
copy'n'pasting them into the Address box of IE, then clicked Go.

The Symantec article discusses Adware.WinFavorites, which includes that
bridge.dll file.

You may have several problems going on. First, the bridge.dll is from
spyware. Here are normal troubleshooting steps for that:

Scan with a current antivirus program (meaning a version not earlier
than 2002 and using updated virus definitions). Also, remove spyware
with Spybot Search & Destroy from www.safer-networking.org and Ad-aware
from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure to update these programs before
running them. These programs are free, so run them both since they
complement each other. It is best to run antivirus and spyware removal
tools in Safe Mode. You may also want to run CWShredder and HijackThis
from http://aumha.org/freeware.htm. Although CWShredder is no longer
being updated, it will still clean older variants of the CoolWebSearch
malware. Please read the instructions carefully. Also, make sure
you've visited Windows Update and applied all security patches. Do not
install driver updates from Windows Update. Make sure you are running a
firewall.

Now, as far as Chkdsk running, it could be caused by 1) having ZoneAlarm
5.0 installed - this was an issue with their software and it was cured
by an update from ZoneLabs; 2) a faulty hard drive. You can test your
hard drive by downloading (obviously from a working machine) a
diagnostic utility from the drive mftr.'s website. Usually you will
make a bootable floppy, boot with it, and then run a thorough test. If
you get errors, replace the hard drive.
