Windows XP Pro Compaq Presario 1200 12XL 414 No sound audio driver?

Hi!

I recently wiped my Presario 12XL 414 and put on Windows XP Pro +
Service Pack 1 from scratch. unfortunately I now have no sound, or to
be more precise i have no sound unless i move the volume slider up and
down! Weird!

Anyway I used windows update to upgrade to the latest Via AC'97
drivers and have also tried drivers from both www.drivers-guide.com
and www.viaarena.com with no luck.

Part of the problem is that i dont really know if its a VIA sound
card, thats just what XP Pro automatically installed. I couldnt find
out any more information from the hp/compaq website:

http://h20015.www2.hp.com/hub_search/product.jhtml?lc=en&pagetype=compaqpres95091&lang=en&cc=us

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas?

Maybe its the windows update and/or new drivers and i need older ones
(perhaps even the windows 2000 ones?)

Maybe its Service Pack 1?

Any help at all would be most appreciated!

Thanks,

Mike

I also have a great Presario product and wiped harddrive clean and installed fresh copy of xp pro and have been having some of the same problems as you except that mine one time tells me one driver and hardware and another time something different. All with no help from Compaq. My only offer of help isn't great but I just go thru and manually install drivers instead of auto and even then it is XP telling me one it finds compatible. Then reboot and see if that one works. I know from yesturday I acessed driver update on compaq that installed soundmax III and that seemed to perk up my "Via sound card.
