Windows XP loses connectivity to network resources

We have 2003 Server network at the office. All the Windows 2000
workstations work just fine, however (all) the XP machines seem to lose
connectivity to network resources after X amount of time after reboot.

Strange thing is - sometimes I can browse network resources only by
hostname (specified in the hosts file) and sometimes only by IP. (don't
see how that makes any sense) Either way, some time after reboot, WinXP
loses connection, and no resources are available. The main
manifestation of this is when trying to use network printers (mapped
directly to printer). If i map a printer to a XP machine as a shared
printer from one of the 2000 boxes, it works fine.

XP machines running SP2 with all the latest updates.

Any help much appreciated.

Hi. I have a similar problem (see my question, XP cannot resolve hostname
(winsock problem?)

Several people here have tried to help, but so far nothing. I find that if I
open a cmd window and run ping -t <hostname> that keeps the problem away for
a while, but it's not a fix.
